The reaity is the poppy issue has been gradually politicised by its opponents. However, to be fair, its partly to do with the passage of time. In say the 40s, 50s and 60s virtually noone would have had an issue with the poppy. A little opposition (mainly with an Irish angle) to it arose in the 70s and 80s as a result of the troubles and conflicts like the Falklands BUT I would be amazed if it was more than the tiniest minority. I think its only with the 90s and 0s that the middle east conflicts and the distance in time from the WWs have been used as an excuse to drag the poppy into politics. However, I think opposition to the poppy is overwhelmingly people who have absorbed Irish republican dogma and it is noticeable just how many people who are anti-poppy tend first and foremost to cite the Irish aspect. I would still feel that anti-poppy views only represent about a few of % of Scottish opinion. It really is disrespectful to disrupt the tradition of the vast majority of people. We are not talking about loyalists etc, just ordinary people, almost all of whom had relatives in the two world wars.

Another thing being willfully overlooked is the fact the money goes to soldiers. A country must have an army. History has taught us the naivity of thinking otherwise. That being so, some soldiers will find themselves in wars and conflicts. Soldiers do not start wars. Governments and leaders do. The poppy charity is for the soldiers who have been harmed through the orders and policy of the governments. The poppy is a charity for the soldiers. Its not some sort of militarist badge and does not represent support for the govenments and leaders who start these wars. By all means protest against the government but not the cannon fodder and remember the poppy is a charity for the cannon fodder. It has nothing to do with the politics.

Right, here's the thing about the timing again,

if it was solely about illegal wars, why did they chose this weekend to protest? They could have done it at any time if that was their intention.

willie maley, son of a british army sergeant and fervent royalist, allowed army recruitment at celtic park during world war one, countless players and fans fought in both world wars and after, the british legion is a charity, not a political organisation, therefore the poppy is not political, the GB are tommy sheridan wannabe rent a mob sheep led by people with their own agenda very much against the views of the majority of celtic fans, google warrington bomb, justify that, justify bombing a remembrance day parade, just as you cannot justify the killing of aiden mcanespie or * sunday, its very easy for the rent a mob too sing and protest about no poppies,if it wasnt for millions of ordinary britains and catholic irish in both wars the rent mob wouldnt have the right to speak, but do it away from celtic FOOTBALL CLUB,we should be talking about nine nil and sfa corrruption, instead the rent a mob give a big stick to every anti celtic paper to beat us with, they were so wrong in so many ways

I've never solely supported Celtic because of what happens on the park.

Just as a point, and if you read my previous statements on this issue I have great sympathy for the GB cause, could people please stop stating categorically that the war's in Afghanistan and Iraq were illegal. The war in Afghanistan was entirely legal, and the war in Iraq, although more controversial, has a strong legal defence in international law. To state that they are illegal is transparently suited to the point of your argument and is, in fact, pretty much nonsense. Just a point, because it really winds me up.

can I suggest that the mods dont close this thread. It would be like punishing everyone. Just reprimand the agressive hotheads who are making arses of themselves.

Demonstrations, rallys. Not football FFS. if they care about it that much. They should organise a trip to London to protest. They're half-arsed doing it with a banner from CP- that dont even belong in football

Why was it made at the weekend? Have a * guess!

it may have something to do with next Sunday, the symbol of which is the poppy, which represents, along with every other war British soldiers have fallen in, the afore mentioned wars
