this is the kind of post michael kelly or jack mcginn would have created.

of course we do expect to much, but we only want our club to always strive to get better.

Pish. The EPL relegation candidates could not do what we do in Europe. weight? We would be about 5th-8th now and we would win it after a couple of years with the TV money.

So you say that all your players are better than teams such as West Ham and Tottenham. Im honest to * laughing. I have been told by a member of your staff to stop posting this harshly which i shall. But its my opinion and I deserve to have it.

Are you even a Celtic fan judging by your avatar your not so all you do with you sad life is go on internet forums and try and wind up others clubs supporters, go get a life instead of arguing over the internet when your team has no proper history and had to rely on a Savour billionaire to save your club from being where Leeds are.

GTFO go find a Chelsea forum

No. After watching the Celtic side of 66/67 who also played in half-empty stadiums in the "* ends of nowhere" and went on to win the European Cup with an all Scottish eleven i don't think our expectations should be anything less. That team proved it could be done. I know everyone will start comparing the football of today and the champions league of today against the football of the 60's and the then European Cup and say there is NO comparison and that it's much harder today and bla, bla bla. Believe me those top European teams of yesteryear were every bit as powerful then as they are now. Celtic's feat then was just as huge then as it would be now if we were to go on and lift it...maybe even more so back then. So yes our expectations should be high, we did it once we CAN do it again.

You make good points but I still disagree. The economics of football today are very different, there is no comparison between now and then, in economic terms. Some clubs were richer than other clubs back then but not to the extent of the game today. Also there is far greater transfer of players today and the richer clubs simply buy the best players to maintain their success and wealth. It went on in the 1960s but nowhere near as much as today.

Football is structured now to make the rich richer. The structure of the CL is one way this is fixed. In a straight knockout cup there will be upsets but if you make it a group with six games you reduce the risk of an upset by two thirds. The fact that four teams from the big rich leagues get in is another example. As long as we remain in the SPL and as long as the CL remains structured as it is then it is highly unlikely that a team outwith Spain, Italy, Germany, England or France will win the European Cup.

Isn't this what being a football fan's all about though? :87: Supporting your team no matter what happens.
If Celtic went out right away at the CL, i'd keep supporting them even when they were totally against the odds of winning anything. We've got a far better chance of winning the SPL than anything else really. And i'm not complaining, our SPL start's been great so far. The CL is a far more complex league and we're against such teams that if we did win, it'd seem to most (other supporters) more like a fluke than anything.

I dont care though about the CL as much as the SPL. If we win? we win, brilliant. If we lose, there's always another year.

Of course you are correct Martin, the economics of the game are vastly different now from what they were then in the sixties. Sure the scales are tilted to favour the wealthiest teams these days, even more so than they were back then. Still, with that said, i believe it is still quite possible for teams out with the higher regarded leagues to be able to compete and expect to reach the latter stages of the Champions League. I am not saying i expect Celtic to win the Champions League every time we qualify for the tournament, but i do always think we are capable of getting out of the group stages (ok i have been disapointed many times lol) but still, it's not a pie-in-the-sky dream, it is do-able. Once out of the group stage it's a knock-out competition and anything can happen. If we have no hope, no real expectation then why bother? I still think it right that Celtic fans should have a high expectation of what the team can achieve, now more so than anytime else in our recent history. I think this squad of players we have now have potentially more promise than any other Celtic side of the last 20 years, including MoN's sides. I think very exciting times are ahead for us Celtic supporters.

    He is right.

    I'm 44. Don't remember Lisbon.

I watched us getting booted out of Europe by major teams like (I'm spelling this phoenetically as I don't even know that they exist anymore)

    "Shasenring Zwickaw" (poland)

We've been pish in Europe since about 1974, until MON's Seville

It's been great to be at these giddy heights, but we are, as someone said earlier, punching above our weight

    Maybe turn this around....

Is there only so far we can go, whilst being in the SPL with the current cash and player availability?
