I don't think we're that far removed from threat or danger in daily life. For example I wouldn't go for a walk in the park late at night or through a housing estate either. Those are two things in a civilised society I should be able to do without feeling I am putting my personal safety at risk but I can't.

Why do kids spend so much time playing Xbox's and Playstations instead of being out playing football with their mates? I don't believe it's because kids today are inherently lazier than we were when we were growing up. In my opinion it's got more to do with parents being too afraid to let their kids be out on the streets in case something happens to them.

I 100% believe this country is a more dangerous place than it was when I was growing up.

I actually believe that is more to do with the fact we live in an age of mass information. We are now aware of all the dangers in society, no longer blinded by a veil of ignorance. Nowadays we know how many rapists, murderers, paedophiles etc etc live amongst us in our areas, which scares us. Beforehand we did not.

I honestly don't believe today is any different to say - 30 years ago. We just have access to more information, which in turn frightens us. As Sween said, previous generations were privy to violence and death on a regular basis, whereas we live quite a sheltered life.

I can only talk from my perspective as someone who's dad was shocked 12 years ago when he watched me playing GTA, running around with a chainsaw cutting people up. Now I'm twice as old and like I said I was very shocked watching the Dnipro video, so it's not definitely the case that computer games desensitizes people. Not always anyway.

Could parents being more scared to let their kids out be more related to ignorant naivety back in the day? Certainly a lot of creepy Ian Brady * out there in the good old days.

I'm sure statistics would show that violent crime figures continue to fall- I think we're just more exposed to hearing and seeing crime reported, 24/7 with instant media, and the perceived threat of an imminent terrorist attack, even though one hasn't occurred since 7/7- and it gets us kind of paranoid and fearful when actually the threat level is very low.

Just how the government wants us, using fear to control and brainwash us, with the boogeyman out there lurking in the shadows :fear:
