CRAIG Gordon revealed that his world-class save to deny Luis Suarez a goal just before half-time in the UEFA Champions League clash with Barcelona on Wednesday night was the result of hours of preparation and practice on the training ground at Lennoxtown in the days leading up to the clash at Celtic Park.

A pinpoint cross from Messi found Suarez, but his powerful header was superbly blocked by the Celtic goalkeeper, stunning the Uruguayan and keeping Brendan Rodgers’ side well in the contest.

And the Hoops keeper, reflecting on the game and that save, admitted that it was of his best.

“Hopefully that will be in the highlights reel come the end of my career,” he said. “When you do it against a superstar like Luis Suarez, it’s always going to get talked about more, but it was actually something we worked on during the week - the speed across goal.

“That’s how Barcelona get a lot of their goals – so Woodsy, our goalkeeping coach, had me well-prepped for that type of thing happening and we were doing similar exercises to that for a few days leading up to the game.

“There weren’t too many saves in training but eventually I got the one that really mattered.”

And the 33-year-old, enjoying his first UEFA Champions League group-stage campaign, believes that the experience will prove beneficial to the Celtic squad in the months and years ahead.

“I thought the performance against Barcelona was reasonably good,” he said. “We restricted them to fairly few chances – they’re always going to get chances because they’re such a good team but I thought we performed well in that respect and can take confidence from it, and take that into our domestic campaign.

“We’ve played some top-quality teams that you would expect to go quite far in the competition and we were maybe a little unfortunate in how strong the group was, but they’ve been great games to play in.

“We wanted to try and qualify and stay in Europe for as long as we could and I think we’ve definitely improved as the campaign has gone on, and I think we’ve been a real test for the teams we’ve come up against. Hopefully we can build on that and go into next year’s European campaign stronger.

“You always go out and test yourself against the best players and at times we’ve done very well against them, so that gives you the confidence to know you’re able to do that and you’re able to mix it with some of the best teams in the world and perform well. And if you can’t take confidence from that, then nothing will.

“It’s been good to test ourselves and do well against these teams and, looking forward, we can take that on as a team and build from there.”

Is that all you do here? Pick out the negatives? Keepers are not expected to save penalties, yet in your eyes he's to save that, dribble the ball by the full team, stop then deadball chip it and score or he's * and we need a new one. Find somewhere else to troll.

Not a priority but we do need a replacement for De Vries.

Great instinctive save last night, real top drawer reflex.
Glad he is in the team as when he was dropped, he probably deserved to be dropped as was not playing well. He has been helped with his replacement coming in and being gash.....he now looks like he is going to kick on and hopefully he can get back to his first season form, he was fantastic that first season.

He'll probably have a rush of blood on Sunday, come charging out his box like a maniac and flatten an Aberdeen player :56:

THE League Cup will always hold a special place in Craig Gordon’s heart. It was the first trophy he won as a Celtic player and that victory over Dundee United at Hampden back in March 2015 also confirmed his successful return to first-team football following a lengthy spell out through injury.

And this Sunday, he’s hoping to add to his medal collection with another League Cup winner’s medal when the Hoops take on Aberdeen at the National Stadium.

The goalkeeper had been out of action for over two years through injury but showed great character to battle back to full fitness and win a move to Celtic in July 2014.

And in his first season with the club, he helped the Hoops win the League Cup and the Premiership title. But it was that day at Hampden, when he kept a clean sheet to help the team lift the League Cup, which remains a particularly important moment for him.

“It was a great day,” he admitted. “We won 2-0 against Dundee United and it was a good performance. We controlled the match and that was my first medal for Celtic, so for that reason it was special for me.

“It was my first season back playing football so that was very special – coming back from the injuries to play in a cup final and win it was a great day for me and my family.”

This Sunday, Aberdeen are the opponents and Gordon knows that it’s going to be a tough contest between Scotland’s top two teams, although it’s a game that he’s relishing.

“Aberdeen always give us tough games,” he said. “Even this season, we’ve come out on top but they’ve been close games, so we know it’ll be very tough and we know their style of player and the type of players they have.

“It’s one thing knowing that, it’s another thing stopping them. They do have good qualities so we’ll have to be at our very best to make sure we’re containing that but also to go ahead and dominate the game and try to win it.

“I’m looking forward to it very much. We’ve worked hard to put ourselves in this position and we’re looking forward to it. It’s a chance to get a piece of silverware and we’re fully focused on it.”

Yep the signing of De Vries was a brilliant one in a weird way. Have been one of Craig's harshest critics but he's been superb these past couple of months.
