Rangers can win title says Burley
by Gordon Pope
Former Celtic and Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley has tipped Rangers for the title following the closure of the transfer window.
There was no surprise deadline day moves, with both clubs completing their business earlier in the window and Setanta Sports expert Burley says that Celtic have not invested in the necessary quality, as shown in their Old Firm defeat last Sunday.
“The fans want to see a quality of player come in and certainly there has not been the type of player Celtic fans wanted or in fact players that are going to move Celtic forward,” he told Setanta Sports’ Press Box.
“They're papering over the cracks but for a while they have got away with it because Rangers have been poor. They’re starting to improve under Walter Smith so it’s going to be a big three months for Celtic.”
“Let’s not get carried away after one game,” he continued. “I was reading ‘Walter’s nightmare, it’s all going to go belly up’ all of a sudden they have a very good performance, but one swallow doesn’t make a summer.
"The new signings have got to prove they can do it week in, week out, when they are under pressure."
He added: “I’ve been watching The SPL for three or four years and saw Celtic stumble over the line, I just get feeling now with Rangers not in European competition, if they can keep they players fit, get their strikers functioning, I think they can take the title this year.”
Celtic also failed to clear Bobo Balde’s £28,000-a-week contract from their wage bill, and the 1998 Scottish Player of the Year admits he understands the defender’s motives.
He said: “I’ve been in that situation before, when I went to Derby from Celtic, ironically. Things started to turn sour after a couple of years and John Gregory came in, who was just a nightmare, and we were at loggerheads.
“He was treating me like the dog’s dinner and then the club tried to off-load me but I had made my mind up at that point. ‘If you treat people like that, I’m going to see you out’ and that’s what Balde’s doing at Celtic.”

Who cares what Burley thinks, he's a * anyway and always has been.
-
I was listening to him last night. I had to turn the tv over as i was clenching my fist with rage, it's fair enough he can have his own opinion the thing that made me angry was he was deliberately being controversial and the journalist sitting beside him was pretty much saying that straight to his face.
-
whats controversial about it? we are crap and have been for a while . Fact is, Rangers are favourites for the league. Could we possibly go to ibrox with the current team and get a result? i dont think so. Burleys a celtic man and it doesnt make him any less of a celtic fan than anyone else for voicing his opinion. We deserve the critisism we are getting.

Burley is a * and is so anti celtic, is he a hun in disguise?
-
Stopped listing to burley some of the * he come's out with is unbelivable you would never have known he had played for us with some of the negative comment's he has made. :38:
-
He said he fancied Rangers just like if we went to Ibrox and scored 4 he would say Celtic were favourites to be fair, hes just voicing his opinions nothing wrong with that imo.
-
if burley is being negative? what positives could you take out of sunday. None. Burley is spot on :50:
-
Can't say I disagree with anything he says. Particularly the papering over the cracks. That's what we have been doing for the last ten years.
-
-
At the end of the day he is correct. Celtic never build on something good they weld the biscuit tin firmly shut and dont build until Rangers win something worth while.
-
Scott Booth is 10 X worse than Burley to be fair.
-
I just read those comments from Burly and really I don't see a problem. He has his opinion and has voiced them with honesty.
Sometimes the truth hurts, especially when your so invoved you can be easily blinded. Burly is rare as a pundit, he speaks his mind over many issues, I have heard him on many occaisions, masacre the huns to the point of * myself laughing.
He has no bias to his comments, however I can see why some would be upset by his negative tone at times, especially if he is talking about Celtic.
To make comments like is he a Hun in disguise etc, is just laughable, the guy is doing his job, pure and simple, my own personal view is he is doing it well.Last edited by a moderator: Sep 5, 2008 -

I think Burley usually talks the truth. Loved him as a player in that Lambert and Butler sorry Burley partnership. His only problem is he is permatanned smug * (allegedly).

It appears if your skint and you used to play for Celtic all you need to do is say the team is * and you get a few quid in your back pocket. -
