COMPLACENCY will not be an issue for Celtic, according to Chris Davies, as the Hoops prepare to head to Israel for their second-leg UEFA Champions League play-off clash against Hapoel Be’er Sheva.
The Bhoys recorded a thrilling 5-2 victory over the Israeli champions at Paradise earlier this week in the first-leg, but saw another three-goal lead cut-back to 3-2 at the weekend in the victory over St Johnstone in the SPFL Premiership.
Brendan Rodgers’ side eventually went on to win 4-2 but his assistant manager, Davies, said he expects there to be no such need for a comeback on the road in Israel this Tuesday.
“There will be no issues with complacency,” he said. “We have been very clear with the players. They are very focused and yesterday we had an opportunity where we could have possibly rotated some players but we didn’t. We chose to keep them in, win the game and keep that winning mentality and run going.
“From what we’ve seen of the players, led by Scott Brown the captain, who’s a real colossal figure for the team, there will be no issues of complacency for us. We know what we’ve got to do.
“We analysed them (Hapoel) before that game and have now analysed the first-leg in detail so we know where their threat is in attack, we know defensively a couple of their systems and we have a game plan for how we think the game is going to go and how we think we have can have success.
“It’s good to play against them to look at the first leg to learn about their team, players and system for the next leg. We’ve done that and we’ve got the plan.”
The Celts take a three-goal lead into Tuesday’s second-leg in Be’er Sheva and the right result will see the Hoops return to the Champions League group stages for the first time in three years.
Davies said he and the rest of the team are under no illusions about the task that lies ahead of them but added that the club deserves to be back at the top table in Europe.
“We are all very focused,” he said. “The club deserve it, the fans deserve it, the players deserve it and everybody has been working really hard
“We’ve got a big job to go away now and get the result we all so desperately want but we’re going to have to perform, be tactically good in the game, and hopefully at the end get the result.”

I like this guy. Like BR he speaks very well, he makes the smallest detail seem importsnt. I think he is going to be just as important as BR imo. His studying of other teams seems to be impecable.

It's comforting to know we have a real professional management team in charge again, who know what they are doing, and the players, the fans, and the club are right behind them again, it's like old times again.

And you get the feeling the players don't want to come off the pitch with either a disappointing personal performance or result to face Rodgers and Davies in the dressing room, that is encouraging too because you know everyone is giving it 110%.

    Possibly.
My worry is if Liverpool bomb this year, they might come looking to take Brendan back again.
Personally I think Liverpool were too hasty in getting rid of him.

I don't think there's any danger of Rodgers going back to Liverpool. Not for a good few year anyway.

As much as you have to respect the insight that former pros bring to management and coaching, there's no guarantee that they have the skills to translate this into improved performances. When guys like Brendan and Chris, who haven't really played per say, they've managed to forge a career out of being skilled at the non-playing side of the game. It means they drive more attention into their analysis, learning and understanding of the game. They're professional managers, not former players. Only a subtle difference, but one that definitely seems to lead to a more analytical/out of the box thinking approach.

I'm all for it. Always a pleasure to listen to someone who doesn't talk in constant, tired * cliches

Seemed like every time the camera went to the touchline Davies was up doing something, whether it be shouting instruction or in conversation with Rodgers. Like what I've seen of him so far, looks like a great assisstant.

CD: "The mood has been good today at training. It's good to get straight back out on the grass after a disappointing result.

CD: "We're a little bit frustrated after the late goal yesterday but it's important to take a step back and see the bigger picture.

CD: "We're top of the league, three points clear with a game in hand, in a cup competition and the #UCL. There's lots of positives.

CD: "The opportunity for us is that we correct some of the mistakes, move forward and we become a better team. That's what we'll do.

CD: "We've scored a lot of goals. Fon Williams had a really good game. What we've got to be as champions is a team that can win by 1 goal.

CD: "For us, the most important game is the next one. We give respect to Alloa and we will have to perform to go through.

CD: "They've had a good start and are high in confidence with momentum. They are the top away scorers in their league and beat Inverness.

CD: "They have some good technical players and have had a good start to the season but we'll be ready for them.

PREPARATIONS were already in full swing today (Monday) at Lennoxtown for this Wednesday night’s League Cup quarter-final against Alloa Athletic at Celtic Park.
Having experienced a demanding week, with a Glasgow derby, a tough game in the Nou Camp and then a trip to the Highlands, there is no let-up for the Hoops, who now take on the League One pace-setters, who have only lost one of their opening 12 games in all competitions, winning the other 11.
Jack Ross’ side have already knocked out both Ross County and Inverness Caley Thistle from this season’s League Cup competition, and they head to Paradise full of confidence.
However, as Celtic assistant manager Chris Davies explained, the Hoops players are fully focused on booking a place in the last four of the tournament.
“We've had a good day of training,” Davies explained. “It's good to get back straight out on the grass after a disappointing result. We're a little bit frustrated after the late goal on Sunday but it's important at times like this to take a step back and find a perspective very quickly and see the bigger picture.
“For us, that is that we are top of the league, three points clear with a game in hand, in a cup competition that gives us a fantastic chance to win a trophy before Christmas, and we're in the Champions League. So there are lots of positives.
“What you have to do in disappointing moments is find the opportunities within them. The opportunity for us is that we correct some of the mistakes, we move forward and we become a better team. That's what we'll do - we find that positive out of it.”
Celtic established a first-half 2-1 lead against Inverness Caley Thistle at the weekend before producing a dominant second-half performance, and only the heroics of goalkeeper, Owain Fon-Williams, and the intervention of the woodwork denied the Hoops any further goals. That proved to be their undoing as the Highland side snatched a late equaliser for a share of the points.
“We've scored a lot of goals this season," Chris Davies said. “Their goalkeeper had a really good game and you can't always score all your chances. Of course you want to be clinical but we scored two goals.
“What we've got to be as a champion team is a team that can win by one goal. Of course we can do that, but if we’re not quite finishing of the chances or the goalkeeper is having a special day then we are resilient at the other end and ensure we win by one goal.”
And the Celtic assistant manager added that the squad also received a boost with the return of Jozo Simunovic following a length injury lay-off.
“It was good to have Jozo back,” he said. “He came on and made a good appearance. He did excellent in terms of looking strong on the ball and his passing, so we'll see what that means for Wednesday.
“He trains fantastically and has a great attitude and application. He's a lovely guy as well. You can see that he has the personality and when he gets on the pitch he wants to defend and be aggressive and he can pass.
“He's the type of defender that we want and hopefully now he can go from strength to strength and show his robustness, play games and have a good season.”

I wasn't convinced by that interview at all.He was nervy and jumpy throughout it, especially the last five minutes when questioned about the Gordon/De Vries situation. He sounded very much on the defensive.
