Not a fan of Mulgrew but can't argue with his performance today.

Today's midfield was perfect, it shouldn't be changed.

Swap McGregor for either Commons or Wakaso, and that team will smash everyone.

There was a major shift in our midfield when Bitton (who isn't a bad player) came on and played there instead of Charlie. He brings a bit of steel and some definite passing.

I wouldn't swap McGregor for Commons, I'd probably put Wakaso in there though.

Commons hasn't been scoring regularly from open play thus far, just like I guessed. There's no way he'll score anywhere near 30 goals this season.

Aye, no chance he'll get anywhere near that amount this season.

Don't think you can write off how many Commons will get. Lot of people were saying no chance would he get that amount last season. He'll comfortably score at least 20 though.

I don't think he'll score more than 10/12 this season as I don't think he will be HUGELY involved.

I agree, last year he was just incredible, and I doubt we will get another season like that out of him.

I think he could be used out on the right if we are needing something slightly different, McGregor goes down the wing a lot more than Commons would, but Commons could bring the ball inside and make more assists than McGregor.

Great that we would have those options though, as I would like it to stay the way we set-up today, which Commons wouldn't fit into that midfield.

Each to their own mate, he has 5 already. Can't see him only scoring another 5.

I don't think he will. 15 at most.

He's barely scored from open play so far. He only scored that many because none of our strikers were banging them in.

Like I said, each to their own.

He scored that many because the team was set up for him to exploit the room Stokes was making up top. Part of the reason Stokes went on that 14 game barren run as well, Lenny knew Stokes wasn't a lone striker but he was the only option for a while. So he just set it up so Commons could exploit it.

    Was very clever.

That´s why I like Stokes, even though I can personally take him or leave him in terms of quality
(I personally think he´s decent, no more, no less); how many players would be willing to do that so often for the team? He never moans even though it´s the direct cause of all this stuff about him being "not good enough for Europe". Been played out of position so often again this year again and again not a peep.

Mulgrew, never rated him. Amazing how wrong you can be sometimes.

    Precisely.

And that's why I don't think he'll score many this year. We now have Guidetti who will be the focal point.:50:

Scored 20 in a season when Hooper was here and it was him and Sammy up top. 14 with Stooper.

Commons is a cleverer player than he gets credit for, he'll adapt and smash them. Just as he did after Griffiths came in last season.

Charlie did an excellent job today, invaluable having a player that can do such a strong job in various different positions. His passing his first class and he's defensively solid too, by playing him and allowing Johansen to play further forward it improved us vastly. Lets hope this continues again on Thursday night :icon_mrgreen:

It's amazing how much more comfortable players look when Mulgrew is anchoring.

Izaguirre for a start, who has missed Joe Ledley. Mulgrew covers him well.

Johansen, for whom today was by far his best performance of the season.

VVD/Denayer. Nobody covers their bursts from centre half better than Mulgrew.

As he gets older and learns the game even more, his reading of the game will be even more important I think. Not got any pace to lose as he ages anyway.

Thought Mulgrew had a solid game today. Strolled through the first half.
