I'm pretty certain when Peter came in, he wanted all the high earner gone. Hence why Sutton, Hartson, Balde and Thompson were all told to take pay cuts and thereafter punted.

 

Not got any quotes but that is the general consensus. Strachan never mentioned his ability as to why he wasn't playing, just him being on big money.

Similar to how he froze out Agathe and Thommo.

 

I think if he had refused to play then we may have had good ground to terminate his contarct.
