we need to get over this hysteria regarding the last game ,some wee * who wasnt even born when it was played will get full of the buckie and think its his duty to run on and thump a rapid player, who wasnt born or involved in the original game cause he was at primary school.too much crap has been written and the press will have a field day trying to get us banned if something happens, and they have given a platform to every ex player with an axe to grind.i was at the original game but ffs get a grip, its not your fans in their 40s and 50s who will cause trouble,it will be the wee neds

Link, please? [Edit:] Found it myself. Krankl sure is in a league with McGarvey, behaving like an idiot. Never able to keep his gob shut, spouting provocative nonsense.

Same doesn't apply though to Weinhofer, if you care to read carefully.

Another Edit: none of it in Austrian newspapers. Wonder how that piece was fabricated.

Third Edit: the Weinhofer statements must've been taken from the DerStandard piece I linked yesterday. Not all of it translated correctly though. He has never been to Glasgow again since that night. Quality journalism there.

What do you mean by "collapse"? Because of the crowd or because of the performance on the green?

I do not like all this grudge holding. It was a long tie ago and any fans under 30 have nothing to do with that. History will end up repeating itself if people continue going on about that old game.

if we were to come out and be physical against you because the article i quoted suggests your club don't like this sort of game .

Well, if I got you right, than be asured that this squad likes the fight. A physical strong opponent would be the best that can happen to Hofmann and his team. Kratzen, Kämpfen, Beißen ('scraping', fighting, biting) are not just words without meaning in Wien Hütteldorf. The so called "Kampfgeist" is a very important part of our club history/identity and our current coach peter pacult (yes, yes, i know..) has teached his players that tradition well. Our city rival from Vienna "Austria Wien" is known for playing nice, Rapid is know for fighting and never giving up. Of course that is part history, part myth, but the current squad lives this virtue.

In my humble opinion we are the strongest, when we are one goal behind. This team never gives up. So, you see there are very similar characteristics about Rapid and Celtic. And that is one of the reasons why I support both. And that is one of the reasons why I am expecting a very exciting match.

May the better team win. Greets. :shamrock:

your right you do have a good team! i was impressed with you against villa tbh! you also have a couple of really good players also. its a shame we all have been speaking about the teams of 84 other than the team of 09.

I doubt we'll see that kind of game again, as Burns, Grant and Ehn would all be sent off immediately nowadays, and not just Kienast for his punch. I can't imagine a goal like Burns' 3-0 would stand today, nor would an assault like Ehn's on Burns go unpunished. So 'physical' probably doesn't mean the same today as it did back then.

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to the game. My guess is it's Celtic's to lose at home, but you never know. As seen against Villa we tend to need 5 opportunities to score once, and I don't think we'll get that many chances at CP.

You are so right :celt_2: I have a feeling that we're being set up by the media :87:

It goes along the lines of creating a grudge match feeling .........leads to trouble with rival fans........kills off Celtics good name of having the best fans in Europe ............ Spotlight back on negative aspects and lumps our supporters alongside Rangers. It's all about selling newspapers and it's irresponsible in the extreme as both teams will have a few numpties who would play right into their hands :47:

As Celtic fans we need to Mollify them by not playing into their hands. Let's get the good natured banter going again and show them that we are the best :50:

Indeed this is a good posting. Reading some of the other comments one gets the impression some of you are suffering from persecution mania – after 25 years…. You cannot be haunted for ever! <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" /><o:p></o:p>

Also that whole agitation about Rapid’s away kit is useless. Now they will play in what looks like Ranger’s away kit: Red shirts, blue shorts and blue stockings. I cannot think of any other club in the world changing their away strip because of criticism by the home club. Unreal! <o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
Nice to see some reasonable people’s comments here too!

Just to put things into perspective: we're a small team from one of Europe's minor leagues. True, we're by far the most popular side in Austria (no other side could sell 50'000 tickets within a couple of days), and we've also been the most successful. Currently, we're only #2 (at best) behind RB Salzburg who it has to be said manage to have very little success for all the money they've got.

We struggled to get past some side from Cyprus in the qualifiers, and when we were drawn to play Aston Villa most of us thought, great to play an English side, but no way, especially as we had to sell our best strikers to Wolves and SSC Napoli.

When we got past Villa it was the first time in 15 attempts that an Austrian side got the better of an English club.

Reaching the EL group stage certainly is a huge, unexpected success for us, and beating Hamburg 3-0 even more. We've already surpassed the highest expectations this season, and Celtic are favourites going into that game. You look a decent side this season despite all the criticism, and we're not Arsenal.

The thing is though, every once in a while something clicks, and Rapid achieve the impossible, swept away by a wave of euphoria no other team in Austria is able to generate. Sometimes, we ride this wave right to the final (as in 1995/96), more often it crashes after a game or two. We never know. So everything is possible: we might get hammered at CP, or we might ride the wave just a little bit longer.

I think this is not a bad description of our situation. But I guess there is something in between getting hammered at CP and riding the wave. We (Rapid) are usually much stronger at home than away. Wouldn’t surprise me if we beat Celtic and H. Tel Aviv at home - but lose all three away games. Where Rapid end up with 9 points in that group is anyone’s guess.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" /><o:p></o:p>

You've just described Celtic's history in the Champions League, hopefully the Europa League will be different and we'll get an away win while continuing to get our home wins :icon_mrgreen:
