For those Celtic fans present on the day, 16 years ago, that Martin O’Neill was unveiled as their next manager, the sense of déjà vu this evening will be palpable.

Then a veritable giant of the English game, O’Neill’s decision to swap Leicester City for the East End of Glasgow was a seismic moment not just for Celtic but for the Scottish game in general.

When Brendan Rodgers, formerly of Liverpool, steps out onto the top of the Celtic Way around 6pm on Monday evening, the sense of anticipation among supporters will be at least equal to that day in 2000.

The similarities between the men – and the appointments – are many. The small Northern Irish towns where they were born, Kilrea in O’Neill’s case, and Carnlough in Rodgers’ – are separated by just 30 miles.

Both grew up as supporters of Celtic. Both had to earn their stripes as a manager – O’Neill starting out at Grantham Town, Rodgers with the Reading youth team. Each man also eventually acquired such a lofty reputation in England that most thought their appointment as Celtic manager was beyond the club’s grasp.

Yet, for all the many parallels, it would be entirely inaccurate to suggest they are simply two peas from the same pod.Despite his customary black tracksuit and football boots on match day, O’Neill was never a classic training-ground manager.Implicitly trusting his lieutenants John Robertson and Steve Walford to ensure his players were up to scratch for a game, O’Neill generally limited his involvement at Barrowfield to a watching brief.

It was on match days that he came into his own. His ability to rouse a dressing room with an appearance shortly before the team left the dressing room akin to a ball of fire. In terms of group motivation, the current Ireland manager is said to have few equals.

By contrast, the methodology employed by Rodgers is holistic, with attention to detail bordering on the obsessive.
‘You have to recognise where your players are in their career, their life,’ Rodgers explained in Michael Calvin’s book, Living on the Volcano.
‘So, for example, (Mario) Balotelli (who he had at Liverpool) and the life he has had. His starting point is totally different to most others.

‘Not too many kids were born into a family of four and were the only one given away. So you can’t treat him like everybody else. You can’t treat him like the guy who has grown up in a secure family.
‘As a manager you look to the human needs element of the player first, before any professional or coaching aspect.’

According to Malky Mackay, who Rodgers worked with at Watford, to key to the now Celtic manager getting the full and undivided attention of each one of his charges is for them to know how interested he is in every aspect of their lives.

“He will know every player’s wife’s name, their kids’ names, and he’s adept at handling young players,’ Mackay said.
“Society is different these days, you have to grab them in a different way from the way managers used to. You have to get their attention in a different manner.’

Rodgers is very much his own man but the influences of both Tommy Burns at Reading and under Jose Mourinho from his time at Chelsea have been significant in shaping his thinking.

A season spent in direct opposition to Govan’s most famous son also appears to have rubbed off on him. Like Sir Alex Ferguson, whose mind for names and faces was said to be photographic, Rodgers takes as much of an interest in the concerns of the canteen staff as his star striker.

‘It doesn’t matter where someone sits on an organisational chart, they are human beings,’ he explained. ‘It doesn’t matter if you are a football player or are one of the cleaners, that doesn’t matter to me. It’s about respect.’
Compared with the old-school approach, where players were simply viewed as commodities to be used and abused in order to get results, Rodgers’ methodology could hardly be further removed.

‘You train dogs,’ he once said. ‘I like to educate players.’
If that all sounds very altruistic, the cynics would undoubtedly point to the fact that Rodgers spent £291million between joining Liverpool from Swansea in 2012 and his dismissal last October.

There were some huge splurges within that – and some mixed results. £16m on Mario Balotelli. £15m on Joe Allen. £32.5m on Christian Benteke. £29m on Roberto Firmino. The accusation that he was a chequebook manager is hard to escape.

Yet, as far as Celtic were concerned, the devil lay in the detail. Rodgers inherited Luis Suarez and improved him to the point that he’s become one of the three best players in the world.

Although Rahim Sterling made his debut under Kenny Dalglish, it was Rodgers who nurtured him to the point he became a £49m player.
The portents for Ryan Christie, Scott Allen and Patrick Roberts can only be good.

‘I believe a young player will run through a barbed wire fence for you,’ Rodgers said. ‘An older player looks for a hole in the fence, he’ll try and get his way through it some way, but the young player will fight for you.’
Aside from a deep-rooted desire to improve his players individually and collectively, those who know Rodgers best believe his best asset is fierce work ethic.

The son of a painter and decorator and a charity worker, he told the 2012 fly-on-the-wall documentary *Being: Liverpool* how a fear of losing all he’s worked for is his prime motivation.

‘I’ve had to fight and meet challenges all the way through my life because I never had the big background as a football player,’ he said. ‘So I had to earn my stripes and go through the long journey to become a manager.
‘I suppose that fear of ever losing that or of that being taken away, that’s what motivates and drives me on.

‘That’s just my nature – it’s my ambition and my passion. It’s something a football club gets when it employs me.’
Rest assured, those Celtic players who will survive what’s bound to be a fairly brutal summer cull will have to share the same outlook.
‘There’s no point saying “I’ll show you what I’m like if I can get 15-20 minutes on the pitch”,’ Rodgers said. ‘You have to show me what you’re like every single day of your life. To fight for the shirt. Not just if you’re going to get 15 minutes on a Saturday or a Sunday or a Thursday.’

Out of work since being dismissed last autumn, Rodgers will waste little time in getting to work once his unveiling is complete this evening.
But although his modus operandi will differ from that of the man who stood in the same spot 16 years ago, the aim – to get his players running through brick walls for the jersey – has not changed.

‘The modern game has very much been taken over by money and media which is obviously great and football has benefited from that,’ he said.
‘But you can’t get away from the nuts and bolts which is about hard work and honesty.

‘If you want to get there quickly, you’ll get there on your own. If you want to sustain it, you’ve got to go together. It’s not just about winning. It’s about how you win – on and off the pitch.

It's an absolute bargain at £199. I can't help but wonder why you would need one when two months ago you claimed to be earning 100k a year in the financial sector.

Just been watching an old interview with Brendan where he talks about the transfer committee that was in place at Liverpool. Have to say it all sounds a bit similar to the set up we have been operating in recent times. The way Balotelli arrived at Liverpool was exactly the same way Teemu Pukki arrived at Celtic.

I would hope that having been sacked as a result of complying with that system at Liverpool he has put his foot down this time and told Dermot Desmond that he wants to have control over player recruitment instead of having players foisted on him.

I also watched the first couple of episodes of Being Liverpool. Some interesting footage in them. I am really excited to have Rodgers here. In fact I would say this is the most excited I have felt about Celtic since Martin O'Neill was here. I can't wait for the new season to start already.

Well it's been 3 days now and I'm still in shock. Lot to be admired about BR and his approach to management, I hope the board fully support him and trust him with the players coming in & out (something I'm not sure our last 2 managers have had). Can't wait for July now :icon_mrgreen:
