CELTIC’s 2-1 win over VfL Wolfsburg today was another positive step forward for the Hoops, according to manager Brendan Rodgers.
The Celts trailed the Bundesliga side early in the first-half thanks to a fortuitous goal from Daniel Caligiuri but equalised through Callum McGregor after 20 minutes before second-half substitute Ryan Christie sealed the victory with a stylish finish after the hour mark.
The result marked a winning Paradise bow for the manager and also set the Bhoys up well for their UEFA Champions League second round return leg against Lincoln Red Imps on Wednesday, where they will look to overturn a 1-0 deficit.
“It was a really good day,” said the manager. “It was a real honour and pleasure to walk out there in the first game and to have the turnout we had today was fantastic.
“On top of that I think the players performed and we had a double training session yesterday where we worked them really hard and intensely and I think today, even on the back end of that, to have that physicality in the game, how we pressed the game and created opportunities, I was very pleased.
“It was a good day all round for us in terms of our preparation, and was another step for us.
“We set up differently in both halfs and the players coped very well. Over the course there were real good moments of pressing and creating chances.
“I think we had seven real good chances in the first-half then we set up slightly differently but, again, minimised Wolfsburg to minimal opportunities but looked a threat going forward so it was good.”
There was slight concern for the manager when defender Erik Sviatchenko was forced off early on after a clash with the Wolfsburg goalkeeper but the Irishman confirmed the centre-half was okay, and should be fit for Wednesday’s second-leg clash.
Sviatchenko’s replacement in the game, Kristoffer Ajer, also performed admirably in the Dane’s absence after a slow start and the manager praised the 18-year-old for stepping into the breach.
“I thought he was nervy when he first came in but he is a young player and over the course of time he can end up being a very good player,” he said.
“He can play in defence and midfield and he is adjusting to the tempo and speed of everything but he has a lot of potential and I thought after he settled into the game he did very well.
“Every player is under consideration. If I see enough in training and games, it’s irrespective of age. He’s got experience and he’s played first-team football in Norway so if that was the case and I thought it would help the team then sure (Ajer could play on Wednesday).”

Anyone not too impressed with Rodgers so far. He played same team the Huns make show off on Tuesday night. Janko only started cause lustig just back from euro same with rogic cause Johansen was injured. The pile * the was rotten all last season keep starting.
Same formation and tactics. Playing our best player out position til fit in young striker who hasn't showing he deserve to start over griffiths.
