Best Fans in the World?

It's really not. In Brazil the average attendance hovers around the 12,000 mark in the first division and 5000 in the second, in huge bowls making for poor atmospheres. Argentina is a bit better, up at the 20,000 mark. Everywhere else in under 10,000.

Away from the big clubs or clubs on a good run atmospheres are poor. Money and security issues playing a major part in that.

When discussing the "best fans in the world" I think people forget that the numbers going is just as important as the noise created by those that go. Red Star Belgrade have poor attendance figures overall but those that go are fanatical. You have to try and find a balance of the two, instead of just having the traditional stand partly full and singing, accompanied by thousands of empty seats.

Aye, it depends what you mean by best in the world.

Like you say, wee core ultra groups going mental but only 1,000 of them and 4,000 other people in the stadium is pretty * support for teams in Croatia and round about there.

Same in Russia 30,000 and 40,000 going to Moscow Derbies in stadiums that hold 70,000 - 80,000 is garbage considering the size of Moscow and the quality of the teams even if the atmosphere is good.

South America, the fans are a bit mental but barely anycunt is at the games similat to Italian or Eastern European countries where you get your wee hardcore ultra groups but stadiums are deserted.

The only countries with big attendances and decent atmosphere I ever see is Germany. Spain and England get good attendances but poor atmospheres. Portugal, Belgium and Holland get decent crowds and decent atmospheres but nothing better than us or Sevco.

Clubs like Man City dont fill their stadium yet their stadium isnt even that big, they come from a big City and have one of the best teams in the world. If we had Man Cities squad we could double Celtic Park and fill it even in the SPL.

Man City do fill theirs. They've averaged 47,000 this season and last. Only hundreds off capacity.

30-40,000 in Moscow derbies is not uncommon. Football is more popular supported in terms of numbers outwith the city.

Who actually decides who's he best in the world does anyone actually know?

I think celtic fans got the whole jist of the Seville era wrong we got an award for behaviour off of Uefa it wasn't for being the best in the world and I've never seen anybody receive anything like it before or after then! Quite cringey tbh

I agree with the OP! The Green Brigade (before they were cast to the four corners) made up for what is a pretty subdued atmosphere. Without them, there is NO atmosphere. Honestly though, if I dodge the odd home game, it's because the entertainment factor has gone, maybe rectifying this might bring some fans back.

The OP has a point.... but i will add a few comments.

the match atmosphere is not down to one team - it takes two teams to create the conditions necessary for the fans to play their part. Barcelona, Man Utd or similar teams can generate fan passion.... Kilmarnock, Ross County etc DO NOT.

Another factor is the competition,, domestic league games are the norm but cup finals and European games do create extra interest and genuine excitement. Maybe the Ramsden Cup does it for some folk but Celtic fans will never know as we never play in it.

Fan rivalry or camaraderie can add to the match atmosphere in very different ways. The only other factor i would add is the knock out aspect of a cup game or the vital "six pointer" match with something at stake. Relegation in EPL on last day of the season has created some memorable games and atmospheres but Celtic will never be involved in relegation battles - nearest thing for us is playing for the 3rd place in europe or the CL qualifying game against Karaghandy as an example of all or nothing game.

In matches like these then i think our fans are right up their with the best in the world in terms of support , passion and noise ( considering we have alcohol bans, seated stadiums and daft state regulations in place).

The greatest fans in the world tag may be cringe-worthy but it is a damned sight better than Scotland's Shame.

You have to at least warn them about the atmosphere. Maybe you could take them to a Celtic pub (preferably with live music on) before/after the game (that is what I do when I go with friends to see a regular league game and they always seem to enjoy that).

Attendance wise, while we are not pulling the figures we did during the start of this century, we are still getting good to great attendances considering the dire product on the pitch and the cost. Our domestic away support generally remains steady although our European away support by and large is fairly average to poor now.

Atmosphere wise, we are truly awful at home with a few exceptions ie some European games. It can be a truly disheartening experience going to Celtic Park now and * mend the club for abandoning the only notable section that tried to make things better throughout games. Like others, I have had friends over from the continent to take in Celtic league games and it is embarrassing.

There was more atmosphere made by 7,000 Galatasary fans in the friendly match in Turkey on Sunday night than we’ll get at Celtic Park in a domestic game this season or for the foreseeable future.

Domestic aways, we used to have, by the standards on these shores, a great away support - probably the best with Man Utd. Now we are just plain average, if even that. A few games we'll generate a decent atmosphere but the majority are dead. Sad to have seen this happen.

Wouldn’t surprise me if new players are advised in what sound bites to give when they first sign – unbelievably, there will still be some Celtic fans out there who will lap this up, all this great atmosphere and ‘Greatest fans in the World’ pish and worse still, actually believe it.

Think the club have to shoulder a lot of blame by sucking the club dry of any passion. Can't do anything without being scrutinized and hounded by security. No wonder there aren't many willing participants anymore when after it starts to look remotely "rowdy" police and security are around and trying to calm it down. Sucks balls, and indeed * mend them for breaking up the only vocal area of the support.

I can only hope that by separating the GB that they will continue to sing and get even more of the stadium involved making for an even greater atmosphere....but I won't be holding my breath

Load of pish, far better atmospheres all over the world at games. Embarrassing watching our home games nowadays, attendance wise and atmosphere. The way things are going we will be lucky to shift 15-20k season tickets next season. Hope the people who suck up the boards * and slated the GB at every opportunity are happy when they attend games now and you can here players talking to each other it's that quiet. Wouldn't go out of my way to go to a match now, even if the tickets were free.

I agree that a section of our support have been treated disgracefully, but we will easily sell that number of ST next year in my opinion.

Think it might take a decent bit of investment in the squad. If say, we lose VVD and don't spend a decent amount replacing him, people might think we are going to get done in the CL like we did this season. And that's the only reason for getting one now going by the amount of ST holders who turn up every week.

Won't be as low as I said but can see it going down a fair chunk from this season.

Still think they will go down a bit, not as much though. That is unless we sign a player or two that get folks attention. What do you think the numbers will be like ?

Just can't see where the incentive is to pay for a season book to watch us struggle against European opposition, with a squad lacking in real quality. And if, as someone touched on earlier, our away games are becoming less exciting to attend then that's another reason not to renew.

But how many other clubs would sell 45,000 tickets a game at prices of £22+ to see Motherwell, Kilmarnock, Ross County and Hibs. And Sell £16million worth of merchandise a year.

In terms of money and still sticking by whilst getting the * taken out of us we must be up there.

You wonder what we'd be like if we were in the Bundesliga with better players and paying £10 less a game.

Someone mentioning Lazio, Lazio only get 29,000 a game, pay less than us, have better players than us, play better teams than us and their city is something like 10x the size of ours.

Great point.

We have more season ticket holders and a higher average attendance than anyone else in Serie A, despite our country being less than a tenth of the size and having a much shiter league.

I think at times we forget our circumstances when comparing our fans with other clubs.
Many many clubs in much bigger leagues and city would bite our * hands off to have our support.
Yes the numbers are down but being realistic we can't get 55k season tickets sold every year.
Even in the 1960's when we was one of the best teams in the world near the end of the 9IAR the numbers were down.
