Seems faster with the ball at his feet than he is without it. When attacking the edge of the box he comes alive but is often towing caravans elsewhere on the pitch.
I think he will find the right balance, maybe when Hatate is put out of his misery for a bit.

You are right. Nygren is a good player and a likeable person.

But our midfield is so dysfunctional, that any new signing being introduced to it is going to look lightweight, because all our current midfield quota have similar qualities and weaknesses, and the glaring absence of a physical, mobile DM is killing us.

I've always been of the footballing opinion, that any good, winning team must comprise of two quality midfield ball winners and one flair player.

If that balance is not right, then we are always going to fall just short of our full potential

A new manager coming in after Brendan, first task will have be to to reconstruct our midfield, so that it is fit for purpose.

Been trying to think where to fit him in..

I'm tempted to say right wing again but drifting more central and no hugging the line..

He has to, has to have legs around him though. So Donovan who is athletic and can bomb on. Same with Johnston when he's back..

Maybe Engels who can cover and take that place as the 8 over the right side..

Think we could get some joy out of him that way..

Glipse of what he can do for the Iheanacho goal. Need more of that.

I was a bit surprised he didn’t bury the chance he had just before our goal. It was on a plate for him and he is normally a very decent finisher.

For me he is a 10 that should be given more support from deep to shore up the midfield and let him play just off the front line. In between opposition centre backs and full backs on either side.

We then need someone else to play beside McGregor to provide defensive cover. We don’t have a natural fit for that but Engels or Bernardo are our best bets for now. Bring Hatate on for Nygren later in the game.

Aye....seemed a totally different player when formation changed and he played as a solid 10. Played with more aggression and flair and that's what we've missed.
Playing a flat 3 in midfield they all seem over themselves.
Could even see calmac push forward and nygren and engles drop back to cover.

    4-2-3-1 really helped

He’s a number 10. In fact he’d be perfect for a system like the one Amorim is trying to implement at Man Utd.

They play with two sort of inside forwards with wing backs providing width. The right sided inside forward position is where he’d be at his best.
