Thats what gives a smidgen of hope that he might be decent.

9 times out of 10, we punt for players in the 1-3m bracket, with some glaring exceptions obviously.

5m is a decent amount. But i dont think for one second that the BoD have suddenly decided to loosen the purse strings, its probably more the old "a, b, and c know him, and rate him, Rodgers has said ok, so * it, 5m".

In any case, at 5m, its highly unlikely hes a bad as Scales or Welsh. Heres hoping.

Forgive me if I’m wrong here but I’m sure VVD was one of the best defenders in the Dutch league outside of their top 3 sides and then got into the team if the season did he not?

Celtic have submitted a £5million bid for Sheffield United defender Auston Trusty, sources have told Football Insider.

The Glasgow giants have turned their attention to landing the USA international as they work on multiple late-window arivals

It is believed that United are reluctant to sell but the Hoops are pushing hard to try to make the move happen before Friday’s cut-off.

Celtic have securedrecord fee for the sale of Matt O’Riley to Brighton and they are set to invest the bulk of that into Brendan Rodgers’ squad with 26-year-old Trusty a high priority

Offers have been made for Augsburg’s Arne Engels and Los Angeles FC’s Mateusz Bogus, and now Rodgers has made his move to land Trusty to strengthen his defence.

Football Insider revealed (August 26) Celtic are pushing to bring Bogusz and Engels to the club before Friday’s (30 August) transfer deadline

Trusty has featured twice for the Championship club so far this season, scoring once in their 4-2 League Cup win over League One side Wrexham.

The American defender made 34 appearances for United last season, 30 of which were starts, as they were relegated from the Premier League, finishing in dead last.

Sheffield United paid £5m to sign him from Arsenal last season but with the club has since dropped out of the Premier League they may be keen to recoup the fee.

The prospect of Champions League football and the opportunity to team up with countryman Cameron Carter-Vickers may be enough to lure Trusty to Celtic Park.

I get the opinions of trusty but to be honest Celtic have a habit of plucking out players from Englands obscurity and making them into reliable players. O Reilly, Wilson etc.

I trust we can develop him, not ideal as we wanted a player who could hit the ground running for the CL ...but I'm honestly writing that off this year as we haven't got or bedded players in on time.

    https://roysviewfrom.com/2023/08/03/birmingham-fans-views-on-auston-trusty/

Read these comments from Birmingham fans from 2 seasons back. SUFC signed him and primarily played him at left back or left side of a back 3. Imagine going from playing left side CB of a back 4 in the championship and absolutely strolling it and winning POTY. Then you’re signed to the worst team in the premier league and thrown in as a left wing back, left back and into left side of a back 3 and coming up against some of the most lethal attackers in world football every week.

For me, those comments from Birmingham fans are very promising.

Read a few reports on him.

    Aggressive, proactive defender

    Very good in the air

    Strong, physical and very quick

Tends to drive forward with the ball rather than being strong passer.

    Maybe simialr profile to Ajer??

Trusty strikes me as the 2024 version of Jenz. He will come in an do a job if necessary, but he won't displace Scales.

If this is true, then it means Nawrocki is off.

I'll withhold judgment until I see him in the Hoops. Initial reaction is it's underwhelming but I've thought that in the past and been wrong. Just pleased to get in a feckin centre half!

His clips from Birmingham actually seem really positive in my opinion.

If nawrocki also goes then we need another CB on a loan to buy.

One injury and we are back to Scales and/or Welsh.

Really need 3 to choose from + Scales. Welsh isn't good enough.

We aren't paying 5mill for him to be back up.. looks like our 4 CBS will be ccv/ Welsh ---- trusty/scales..

The profile is spot on but based on admittedly a limited number of times i seen him last year, looked well out his depth at that level.

Hopefully just didn’t suit a back 3 and a less proactive style of defending.

Comes after Scales best performance bar Atletico at home ironically!

Talks of Mikey Johnston going to Sheffield United for £2.5M as well. Potentially as part of this deal

Still remember CCV got a poor rep while at Bournemouth before he came here, there’s plenty players that are pish and look good in that league and vice versa.

    Will trust the process.

If Mikey Johnson is part of the deal then I don't imagine we will be paying anywhere near £5M for Trusty.

With the disclaimer, if the report is true.

This is a grim rumour that won't go away.

We needed a significant upgrade on Scales for Europe and seem to have landed on a 26 y/o with one decent year
in the Championship. By all accounts a bomb scare last season.

Waiting all Summer for a new CB and this is the best we can do? Is this the genuine bit of quality we've been waiting for? I don't see it. Can't help but feel massively underwhelmed.

Would genuinely rather have Starfelt back. He'd look like Maldini in the EFL Championship.

Maldini would have looked like Starfelt in Sheff Utd’s defence last season in fairness.

I just don't see it mate. We'll be under the cosh massively in Europe like always. We need proper defenders. Trusty was getting rinsed and rag dolled in the EPL so expecting him to step up in the CL is something I'm not confident about.

Our scouting/recruitment is pathetic if Trusty is the guy we're pinning our hopes on. Heard the same * about that dud from Liverpool last season who was crap too.

It's pure copium/desperation on our end as a support because we're in dire need of reinforcements.
