I wasn't sure what thread to post this in, but this makes the most sense.

There's been a pretty big rumour making the rounds over the last couple of days regarding the release of the next Assassins Creed game. It started with a post on 4Chan by someone claiming to have worked on the series, but it's now been backed up by Kotaku who've got a good track record when it comes to leaking Assassins Creed games (they leaked Unity a few days before the announcement and Syndicate about a year before it was officially announced).

The first part of the rumour is that there wont be a new Assassins Creed game this year. Some people were expecting some sort of tie-in to the movie which is due out later this year (starring Michael Fassbender) but that's apparently not the case. However, late last year someone discovered that Ubisoft had registered a trademark for something called the 'Assassins Creed Collection'. The current belief is that this collection is some sort of next-gen remaster of the last-gen games (Rogue, the game that was released alongside Unity still hasn't been ported to next gen consoles).

The fact that's it referred to as a collection obviously suggests that it's more than one game which has lead to speculation about just how many games would be included. Some think it may just be the main numbered titles, others are saying it might be the Ezio trilogy (partly because the Ezio character will apparently be making a cameo appearance in the movie) and many are hoping it'll include every single AC game released on the previous-gen (which would be seven games for anyone curious). Basically the idea would be that such a collection would be a good starting point for people who like the movie, but haven't got in to the games.

It's also being reported in a few places that Watchdogs 2 (which will be set in San Francisco) will instead be filling in as Ubisofts's major IP end of year release.

In regards to the second part of the rumour, an Assassins Creed game will be released in 2017. However, it's apparently going to be treated as a semi-reboot for the franchise. Here's basically everything that I've seen online so far:

As an aside, the original 4Chan post also addressed the issue of the lack of a Feudal Japan game, which has been rumoured and heavily requested, since before AC2. Apparently Ubisoft are hesitant to give the go ahead because they feel the game would cost too much to produce. The AC games are expensive to make for Ubisoft, and as such, to keep expenses down they tend to recycle animations for a few games (unless they're doing a major overhaul of the engine like with 3 or Unity). A Feudal Japan game would require a whole new set of animations, which they claim would look out of place in other settings and thus couldn't be recycled.

All of this could turn out to be nonsesne, but I thought it was worth sharing anyway.

    Nice one.

If Ubisoft only bring out an Assassin's Creed game once every two years, I for one will be chuffed. They need to take their time and make changes that enhance the game with every iteration.

Regarding the rumoured 'Empire' game. Egypt seems like a good choice but the details you posted don't fill me with much confidence.

    - Hopefully the don't go with a character who doesn't talk much. Don't want another bore like Connor. Making them a bit flamboyant and confident i.e. Ezio and Edward is the way they should go.

    - Rome again, really? Hope this is false info. Greece sounds cool.

    - The Witcher 'feel' is a bit strange. Other than the fact they are open world they have nothing in common. Mind you, the combat in The Witcher is more difficult so that could maybe work with AC.

    - Horses are fine but it better not be in exchange for fast travelling.

Suppose we'll probably get confirmed details within the next couple of months.

Atleast they are trying to shake things up abit if its true, although im really enjoying syndacite. Also just found out that apparently AC and watchdogs are set in the same universe, abstergo entertainment exists in watchogs and sells games, and in black flag and rogue you play as employees of abstergo in the modern day sections. I mind playing watchdogs and theres abit where you can spy on a father and his kid playing an assassin creed game, i just thought it was an easter egg and it probably was but it would be class if they done a cross over at some point, would certainly help the watchdogs franchise.

I agree with you about Egypt. It's an interesting setting, but some of the details don't sound too great. I mean they've been adding all these gadgets and improvements in the more recent games, it would be strange going that far back in time where everything would be much more basic (unless this is where the lack of historical accuracy comes in to play). I don't see how they could do naval battles either unless cannons are replaced by archers or something, but it doesn't sound like something that would work well in that setting.

I'm not so sure about the protagonist though. I don't want a nearly silent protagonist - that would be a massive step back, but at the same time I don't want another Ezio. I actually quite liked Connor, despite their attempts to sabotage his character, and I was disappointed that we never got another game to try and address some of the issues with 3. At this point in time it seems like every male protagonist in the series is basically the Ezio styled rogue with a heart of gold (although ironically the guy you play as in Rogue doesn't seem to fit that mold from what I saw in the trailers) Edward was basically rough Ezio and Arno was a really * attempt at doing Ezio 2.0.

I think the 'Witcher style' phrase is basically the new 'Dark Soul's gameplay' that was used to describe every other game action game over the last few years (even the Witcher 3 itself). If it's true though, I'm not sure the Witcher is the game they want to be emulating from a gameplay perspective, seeing as that's the one thing that quite a lot of people seemingly didn't like about the game.

Syndicate is pretty good from what I've played so far (I think I'm about half way through) but the series definitely needs a shake up. The modern day segments are absolutely atrocious, if they aren't go to drop it completely they need to move on from the current storyline and characters (which they probably should have done post-3)

I've haven't played Watchdogs, but I don't understand why Ubisoft haven't done a proper shared universe with some of their IP's. There's a lot of potential there, and I can't really think of any other publisher doing something like.

Not sure if this is XBOX only now or cross platform discussion, but do agree they need to do something with this series.

It's my fav game series, however it's starting to wane now.

Most defo the present day stuff is just getting dull now, with Desmond there was at least a connection, but now there's nothing with the animus subject, no bond, nada.

I would really like them to get to that light at the end of the tunnel and put and end to it, hit out another 1 or 2 and that's it.

My fav was probably the first with Altair, although liking Pirates I did like Black Flag. Didn't enjoy the last one I played (Unity). And I have Syndicate still to play.

Bought this last week and it's good, much better than Unity but not up with Black Flag or AC2.

However, I'm almost done with sequence 5 so must be about 2 thirds through...and I just feel a wee bit bored. Clearing different areas and it's just 'kill this templar, 'bring this criminal back alive', 'clear this stronghold' etc. Quite repetitive. And the gang fight at the end is always underwhelming.

Might just be getting tired of the franchise.

I finished it at the start of the week and I agree with most of what you're saying. It was a safe middle of the road entry, but a definite step up from the mess that was Unity.

The main/historical story was fairly meh, a few of the side characters & antagonists were interesting (which is a change from the last few entries) but the final confrontation was quite poor. The Dreadful Crimes missions, which I think are PlayStation exclusive, were really fun though.

The modern day segment continues to be incredibly * and cringey. I genuinely hate every single character in the modern segments, I keep hoping they'll write them out/kill them (which they should've done post 3) but sadly someone seems to like them. I would honestly pay extra for a version of the game that completely removed it.

I really like the time anomaly thing they did, that easily could've been a DLC but I'm glad they kept it in the base game. It had some * modern day stuff sprinkled in, but I enjoyed for the most part.

The gang fight thing was stupid like you said, especially as you can kill the borough leader before the final confrontation. You would have thought it wouldn't have taken too much effort to create a few different scenarios instead of the same one repeating itself. I did enjoy the side activities in general though, they definitely handled it better than Unity.

In terms of the modern day stuff, I agree. Actually not had much of it at all so far, just 3 sections I think.

But like you said, the modern day characters are awful. Shaun, who was the most annoying thing about the early AC games, somehow remains a character and to me he seems like an entirely different character. Still a pain in the *, though.

The side characters are good fun. One of my favourite things about AC games are interacting with well known historical figures. Obviously da Vinci is perhaps the standout so far. But the likes of Blackbeard, Dickens, Darwin and Alexander Graham Bell are all good.
