If I was born and raised in Northern Ireland, I would probably support Northern Ireland as long as I liked the crowds who supported them. If they were sectarian and bigoted then I wouldnt go. If they were decent enough guys then I probably would go. The politics wouldnt bother me.

I was rooting for them in most of their matches at the Euros but certainly wouldn't say I support them. Know quite a few who are fans though (obviously are from the North).

Which part are you surprised at most.... that I was rooting for Northern Ireland?

    That I wouldn't support them?

That I have friends from the North who support them?

That I have friends from the North?

    Or

    That I have friends?

Seriously mate, you would happily be in amongst these and it wouldn't bother you,

Personally, any Celtic fan who would feel association with those fans, shouldn't be anywhere near our club.

    * 'northern ireland' as a occupied part of ireland it should never have been allowed to consider itself a country to participate in any sport ,* save the queen ,playing under a flag not recognised by anyone but unionists slowly turning their green shirt blue its quite clear supporting that bunch of * ain't for catholics, nationalists or republicans.

I dont feel any association with them as I have nothing to do with Northern Ireland, but as a relative neutral, it does seem like the football team is moving forward from the sectarian stuff. I thought their fans were great in the euros and I dont see their fans having an issue with guys like Michael ONeill trying to move the team forward (though I appreciate I am viewing from a distance). Northern Irish rugby seems to have done a good job in escaping the sectarianism that used to blight it so there is no reason why international football cant do the same. That isnt to say there are some knuckledraggers in their support but I see the positives.

As regards the idea that 'real' celtic fans couldnt possibly support Northern Ireland, I dont buy it. And Im sure Martin ONeill, Neil Lennon, Niall McGinn, and Anton Rogan would disagree as well. Not everyone is tied to politics, or even nationalism, and many people will choose to play for a nation simply because that is where they come from and they feel an affinity to the football system they came through. I think the more catholics that choose to play for northern ireland rather than ROI the better. There is no reason why football cannot be a positive force.
