If it's a 100% sell on fee we could just refuse to sell him and let him see out his contract. Then sign him on a free a month later if he wanted to stay

I don't think a 100% sell on fee would be possible would it? That means a team pays all the money to City for our player. City would be better just loaning him to us till they sell him for about 20-30 million.

We could just sell him to Buckie Thistle for £1, then offer them £50,000 to buy him back a day later.

I'm pretty sure this "100%" figure is 100% of any profit from the sale.

E.g. buy for £6M, sell for £8M, profit is £2M, City get £2M (100% of the profit).

It won't be 100% of the profit as they could theoretically make more by making it a reduced percentage of the total sale (e.g. 25% of the sale above would give them the same £2M) but I'm guessing they'd want a deal where they're at least guaranteed to make the money they spent on him (£12M albeit not up front) if not a profit on this of some sort.

100% sell on fee makes absolutely no sense for Man City because in that scenario, Celtic would never sell him, or sell him for well below his valuation.

100% of any profit makes more sense, but it still does not optimise the potential return for city. If Celtic pay £8m for Roberts with a 100% of profit clause, Celtic will sell Roberts (presuming they want to sell him/the player wants to leave) for the first bid that is at least £8m. The buying club will know about the 100% profit clause and only offer £8m. Therefore, City receive nothing.

Therefore, the best thing City can do to optimise their return is agree a % sell on fee that is probably somewhere between 25-50%. In that scenario, if Celtic sell Roberts in 2-3 years time for £20m (which is quite a likely value), city would receive between £5-10m and Celtic would be happy to sell as they'd still receive £10-15m. If it was a 75% sell on fee, Celtic would never sell as they'd only recieve £5m, so Roberts would run out his contract and City would receive nothing.

That's why the 100% sell on fee is nonsense, even if it's just on the profit. Man City would recieve much more money with a 25-50% sell on fee.

It isn't, that's why that surely wouldn't even be a deal to be made for either party?

Is also why the huns logic of company over club can't work.
Club must own players registration according to uefa. So a company above the club can't work - unless they want to admit to uefa 3rd party ownership or admit to the rest of us that it's one and the same.
