Hopefully not as much as Taylor needed...

Greg Taylor needed 3 years to play constantly on the level we need. And he cost 3 mil as well. Now that he got, rightfully, praised for upping his game we jump to the next guy to tear apart.

Could we have gotten someone better for that money? I don't know. I just see a Johnston who gets the deserved praise. But lets be honest, Johnston is very solid on the back but lacks in going forward. That's the opposite of Bernabei who lacks in defense but is much better in going forward, contributing crosses etc.

Why is there such a difference in peoples attitude towards these two players then? Both have to improve but they won't by putting them on the bench or giving up already after half a season.

It's obvious Bernabei didn't get the tactical training as players from other countries get, hence his lack of positioning and tactical understanding sometimes. But that can be learnt. Not within half a season so people should get a grip and give him time.

This is the market we are working in. We will often need to train our players ourselves and rarely can buy the finished article. Such players are normally out of our price range already.

I'm quite surprised by folk writing him off.

He looks a bit rough and obviously needs work, but I see a lot of potential in him. Really positive going forward, and uses the ball really well sometimes. Equally prone to a total brianfart. I agree that giving him the next 6 months and then considering a loan is the right idea.

Still confident he'll make it here long term.

 

Think once he gets a good run in the team he will be brilliant




Some players take time getting used to a new system

 

Shows glimpses of being a right good player but hope he can get a lot better defensively.

 

He plays like a young player, he has a lot of different aspects to his game that he hasn’t learned how to gel together yet. He can be exposed a lot because he can be a bit rash, he likes to nip in ahead of guys and nick away the ball and when it doesn’t work, it leaves him exposed, panicking and scrambling.

He has a lot to work on but he has a lot of things to build on, it’s like a wee jigsaw, he’s got the corners and the border sorted, needs to fill in the middle now.

I generally think, on average, young players tend to click into it 100/150 odd games into their careers. He’s 101 games in, has moved to a very different league, very different culture to a team with very, very different expectations. The most important time for him is pre-season in the summer when players have time to be coached a lot more and going in fresh next season. This is an adapting season.

Just going to take him time, I mean we all saw the massive improvement in Taylor in last few seasons to this one, I’ve no doubt Berni can do the same.

Feel like his pace can be wasted when he comes into the middle too often, would like to see him bomb down the outside more often like KT did and late runs into the channel.

 

Aye its a weird one. He's very quick but sometimes can look one paced on the ball..

 

Can only see a loan being a disaster for him. We need to stick with him and I do think he has a great chance of turning good

Not sure a loan would really do us or him any good, he needs to be here learning to play the inverted role, he could go out and smash it at another team then come back here and just be starting from scratch again.

 

A work in progress, showing good attacking attributes, getting caught out with his positioning at times but no big deal against SPL dross and that should come good with time.

 

Is he injured? Not made the squad last 4 games.
