Adam Matthews was a young boy coming to us with a little bit of hype about him same as Janko, he could prove to be just as good if not better. Not to mention that I didn't see any improvement from matthews after joining us.

We have plenty of experience as it is. Matthews was here last season and we didn't qualify.

One of our best players in Europe last season was Jason Denayer who had never played a professional football match until last year.

Like I said Adam was just about to enter his prime. He knew the club and his teammates. The new guy will have to transition and gain experience. If you cannot see how this makes us weaker in this position then there is no point in me trying to explain it to you in more depth. For the record I have high hopes for the new guy but selling matthews for peanuts just has he is about to give his best years is a mistake. Sunderland fans will be laughing at us when he becomes an established first teamer for them.

Matthews wouldn't have started in the qualifiers.

We are losing Adam Matthews. A good player on his day but hardly irreplaceable. Dropping 2-3 levels? Come on now.

:56: I've never seen so many people so upset about losing a second choice right back.

I love Adam and he's a good player but he's been here a while, I'm sure he himself probably wants a new challenge. We're very well off in the right back area. Anyone who says this isn't good business is nuts. We've already brought in a replacement, what more do you want?

But for a good spell he was brutal, really bad, it wasn't just the odd game, it was consecutively. Remember Hayes and McGinn mainly, absolutely taking the * out of him in the first pittodrie game? And dinamo Zagreb was a disgrace of a performance. He was looking slow in the tackle, standing off and admiring, scared to go in and just now as up for the fight..
He definitely was turning in to signs of his old self, particularly towards the latter part of the season though..

Think he's personally wanted and asked to leave, can't blame the board if that is the case..

Best of luck to him, we'll just have to see how we pan out. Lustig could be over his injury problem's and the new boy could be a star. I'm a little disappointed he's gone and at such a small fee, but I'm hopeful moving on..

If Lustig is fit (I know) then Matthews would have been warming the bench. We have replaced a guy with one year left on his contract who wasn't willing to sign another contract with a highly rated player from Manchester United. It's smart business.

Matthews, as I said, is an average player. What fee are you expecting for an average right back, playing in Scotland with a year left on his contract? If the fee is indeed £2 million then the club have done well.

I highly doubt that. Any football man would see his quality. If indeed he did not rate him as a player then we are in big trouble.

I hear McInnes rates him very highly.

Fair enough point concerning Jason, but how often does that happen? I would be very surprised if Janko fits so smoothly into our team.

How're you to know Matthews wouldn't have started? What's the chances of Lustig not playing in all our games? It wouldn't be unusual for him to drop out.

And I meant we dropped 2-3 levels after Seville. We certainly haven't improved the team since Barcelona, hence my comment.

If he didn't want to sign a new deal, I can see selling, but we don't know if that was the case.

Baffled by the reaction on here.

He's been a good servant but he's the second choice right back for club and country. Chris Gunter has about 4 times the number of international caps, and he's not exactly blessed with great ability.

What have you heard? My thoughts are that this has to be another failed contract negotiation. To give us the benefit of the doubt on this occasion it is possible that his demands may have been quite high with a wee agents word in his ear. Still though we should be nipping these situations in the bud. Bitton will be next * up if we do not sort his contract right now.

Sad to see him go, always had a soft spot for him, that being said we're lucky to have Lustig at RB and see if Janko can push him. All the best Adam

Perhaps we have a memory that goes beyond the past season?

Genuinely unsure how anyone can call £2m a good deal for us. It sets a standard that we should be trying to avoid. It tells other clubs that were willing to listen to relatively low offers for young players in and around our first team who are experienced european campaigners. To take us to the next level it's just as important that we can offload fringe players for a good price as it is that we can offload the likes of VVD and Wanyama for £10m+, maybe even more so.

I'm sure he does. Like i told the other hipster, it was another poster who wanted him. In fact I specifically mentioned that this was a bad idea at the time, if you care to check. Most views that are attributed to me are false.

How are we weaker?? our first choice right back is still here and we have 3 other options at right back , Adam wasn't 1st choice and was fairly average when he played... He was stagnating and it is the right time for him to move on and a younger hungrier player coming is good for us and the other rb options..

I agree to an extent on Bitton , he should be tied down asap and I expect he will be as he is a first choice player.

Exactly. We seem to be completely unable to tie players onto new long term deals. If that is not a concern, I don't know what is.

I completely agree with your assessment of Matthews to be honest and I'm sad to see him go, but like you say I think it's been driven by the player himself.

I think getting £2m for him is decent considering he isn't first choice, he has a year left on his contract and as you admitted he hasn't been at his best. Seems to me as though we've gone about our business pretty well here as we've already brought in a similar replacement.

If 2m is the fee then i think that's pretty low. He's young, played well for us in Europe and getting into a resurgent Wales team. 4m would be about right due to the financial craziness that goes on in the EPL.
