Thought we might have got more from him as we not at his best last season .

Soares and Trippier were both about £3.5m this window. I'm not sure if that Soares was first-choice at Sporting but was a similar situation to Matthews (1 year left).
    I don't think £2m is too bad a price.

Trippier was statistically the best defensive full back in the EPL last season. Fun fact.

Anyway, it's not the price Matthews would have went for 2 years ago but it's a fair price now. Injury problems, lost his Celtic place to Lustig and now 2nd choice for Wales due to his injuries and a year left on his contract.

It could be a * steal for Sunderland though.

If I'd been asked to name a price for Matthews, I'd have said £3-3.5m. So, given his injuries and contractual situation, £2m isn't too bad. I just hope we have a decently-sized sell-on fee included, because I think he's got the potential to do really well down there.

Good luck to him, shame about the injuries as I rated him highly.

£2m ain't too bad, but as said already, we could have got easily 3x that had we sold him a couple of years ago.

Not bitter though, he's been a great servant to the club for the past four years.

All the best in the future Adam :50:

    This isn't the EPL, though.

    Ifs and buts.

Get a wee 10% sell on just in case he steps up a level

After getting it so colossally wrong in the past, you'd think some of us (ahem) would wait to see how it plays out before condemning the board, the club or anyone * else. If we're going to buy into the new era under Ronny, let's stop * and moaning about every little thing we don't know the full details of.

Oh & just because you say something is FACT, does not in fact make it FACT. No matter how many times you repeat yourself.

Sad to see him go as he's been a great servant to the club and on his day is a great player. No doubt he fancies a shot at the EPL and fair play to him for being honest enough about that in plenty time for us to make some money off of him rather than wait a year and lose him for nothing. £2m for a player who we signed on a free is also good business.

I think he'll do well for himself down south and wish him all the very best in doing so! :50:

Understand he wants a shot at the EPL and have no issue with the fee paid. I think he is going to get found out as he will spend most of the game in his own half.

You're sure putting a lot of confidence in a lad who hasn't even played a full season of professional games.

18 (or 19 year olds) are not first team replacements. They're too young.

We signed him when he had already played 41 games for Cardiff City. He also was not immediately replacing our right back.

Neither is Janko plus he was at a much harder club to break into. Give the lad a chance, and stop * yourself every time we sell a second string player:50:

He played proportionally more games for us than for Cardiff. So I'm confused, was he a first-team regular already or did he not replace our right back?
