2mil is fair.

Stagnant as far as im concerned. No noticable physical or capability improvements over the past year or two and I've heard chat that he's not as conscientious as ronny would like....a little too fond of a carry-on and a slightly lazy attitude, not in a bad or devious manner, just doesn't have the mental strength to cut it in ronnys " 24-hr- athlete" culture. A decent championship player will be his level I believe.

Good player for us no doubt and I wish him all the best.

On the other hand, Janko is, at 19, a better physical specimen, so is starting from a better place than Matthews is right now. SERIOUS potential

 

You can only sell if interest is there though and if there isn't and you go around touting the player the value automatically will decrease because clubs know you want rid.. We done about as well as could be realistically expected on this deal..

 

Mental. You would give our second choice right back a 5 year contract on first team wages? Or are you about to tell me he'll accept a low offer when he's got Sunderland offering him a contract ?:smiley-laughing002:

I'm pretty sure he wouldn't accept anyway. The boy knows it's time to move on.

Of course there's a chance the new boy might not be up to it and of course Lustig might get injured, but going by that we should sign ANOTHER right back and several more players for each position. How is the new boy ever meant to get a game if he's 3rd in line?

 

And let's be honest, yous can't say yous never seen this coming, when we were linked with Janko?

 

Think what OG1 was trying to say was that we didn't get a great deal for him, which i agree with. I presume he told us he was intending to leave if he went free agent which is fair enough on him, he can treble or more his wages down south. Just feels this (unconfirmed) 2m is on the low side.

What we're left with is a good right back who has been out pretty much all season and 2 kids that are untested - certainly for Europe. Hopefully Janko is a decent signing but if we go into the latter stages of the CL qualifiers with either him or Fisher starting it is quite a gamble.

 

Which is whats happened here and people are pishing their frillies, i would see the point if we had sold Izzy our only LB but we have just brought in another and have plenty of cover, i honestly fail to see the big deal here

Good point about having a head start on Matthews when he arrived. Matthews had to bulk up a fair bit for example, janko looks at his peak already, at 19, upper body wise..

 

Lustig is a better player in my opinion, janko is very highly rated it seems and fisher is good enough for the spl- if I had to choose between losing Matthews or lustig it would be Matthews every time. Good player but we have enough cover.

 

imo Matthews probably would have been our second choice LB too so now our only real experienced backup in that position is Muldini. Need a LB asap

 

Okay enough being stupid, I like Matthews.... But he's not our first choice right back we had fisher who's good cover aswell and now we have a highly rated 19 year old prospect from United who fans have said they'd like to see him get on ahead of Valencia. Matthews would only get played right back if lustig was injured... So instead of having him as cover we get some money for him, have an instant replacement for cover in janko and fisher... I do like Matthews but I think this is a good bit of business

He's potentially the fastest player in our squad.

 

In reality, what's going to happen is that Lustig will be injured for 3/4 of the season and Janko will play right back.

He's not a bad player, but he's not been that great either.

Hopefully get some money and invest it elsewhere.

 

Being the fastest does not equal being the fittest, i actually agree somewhat, it was obvious matthews wasn't as fit as he could/should be.

Injuries will have been a factor but the boy rarely finished a game and its up to him to make himself match fit for 90 mins plus.

In terms of the 24 hr athlete i think its a common trait in british players, we simply don't have the culture for it. I mean there is nothing wrong with eating 'junk' food or having alcohol but if you want to truly reach your peak then quite simply you cannot have these things.

I think there is definitely an element of that kind of thinking that Deila is simply removing from his squad. When he talks about building his squad it is as much getting players in as getting players out who don't fit the ethos he wants to build. Its why it took a while for commons to get a new deal, its shape up or yer out.

I'm definitely dont want involved in a wee daft argument about this and you're 100% entiltled to your opinion about mine but..ask yourself...(and this is not what I've based my comments soley on )

- Would we sign a new right back at 19 years old and ship out a 23 yr old first team regular if we felt the 23 yr old was going to remain an integral part of the squad? No. Matthews hasn't cut it for Ronny which is why we've moved for someone with more potential. If you do a bit of homework or know an actual manchester untied fan (like I did/do) then you'd know that Janko has that. He fits the mould Matthews didnt.

The fact Matthews didn't is also party down to him too!

 

All that been said I hope matthews does well for Sunderland, he's a good lad and a good dedicated worker
