I think he'll go on to do well, but we can't force him to sign a 2nd choice player contract, nor can we give him a first team key player contract to warm the bench. Realistically if you're saying he should be kept here to develop into a world beater, then you're saying Lustig should be punted instead..

Efe Ambrose had a couple of cracking performances in the Champions League, is he worth £15 million as well?

Doing it in certain games and carrying the form through a full season was a big problem of his, he either was superb or utter * there is no middle ground, but to say because he's played a few games in europe for us he will become one of the best RB's down south is just ludicrous, though i know you never said it but you did back him up :icon_mrgreen:

Matthews would have known about the interest from Sunderland through his agent for quite a while.

If he was keen to go, there would have been little we could have done to stop him, as his contract was running out.

2M+ is fair compensation for a second choice back into his last year of contract, so we did quite well in my opinion.

If he wanted to go and we refused he woud let his contract run out, sign in a pre-contract in a few months, and we would get nothing.

Give it a rest. Heartbroken at losing our second choice right back?

It is nowhere near as bad as what happened with Ledley. Nowhere near.

I see some people are having the craic and taking the hand out of me. I'm glad use are happy that the club you support are now weaker on the field than they were at the start of this week. Shortsighted morons.

What would you do differently? Also if you think we'd get more money if he had more years left, why is it only now that we are getting offers when he's cheap? If we're due massive amounts of cash for Matthews, where was all the offers last year? Why aren't more clubs throwing £2m at us?

    Short-sighted? Ironic.

You're * off and heartbroken about losing a player who has stagnated in his time here...and been replaced by a younger, highly rated prospect from Man United.

    I've not suggested once that he's a £15m player FFS :87:

Imo, he'll go to the BPL and have a similar level of success to Ledley. He'll then either carve out a solid career at Sunderland or move to a solid mid-table/euro contender team for a decent sum - certainly more than £2m.

    Stop yer greeting.

He was our 2nd choice right back ffs. How you can say that without even seeing Janko I don't know either.

Take away 'experience' for a minute, he could easily be a better player than Matthews.

Why? I think you just don't want to lose all the lads from the last 16 season for nostalgic reasons. He's unfit a lot of the time and isn't even our first choice rb possibly 3rd if this new boy is decent which I think he will be, good business from celtic considering we got him for nothing.

Had good potential when he first came here but has stagnated over last couple of seasons. Hopefully the money will be reinvested into the team

This is a big big risk! Imagine he Stayed fit and lustig still had an injury we are replacing him with a maybe kid from Man United reserves who has a bright "future" no experience in any major games. It could be the other way about and the new kid is a shining star but this is seen as weakining the squad!

If Mathews goes to Sunderland and doesn't hit it off or stays out injured all the time and like I said the young boy shows us great potential then it's a * big win! As I said its a big risk though

I back up OG1 in his point that it's poor business, not that he's a £15m player or the next Bale.

As I keep saying - has this situation been handled as well as it could've been? Was Ledley? Was Samaras? Was Hooper? Was Wilson?

imo the answer to all of those is No. We are poor at handling contracts of players on our own books.

The first thing I would do is to offer him a new 5 year contract. If he says naw then I would leave him at the club until his replacement has established himself and it is safe to move him on, even if this means letting him leave on a Bosman.

Next season there is a chance that our right hand side could be our weak link. If Lustig is injured and the new boy is not up to it or takes a while to get going then we are leaving ourselves venerable. We should be getting stronger not weaker.

Yes but players who are playing in the BPL cost way more because of that reason. If they played in another league some would have 7+ million cut from their price.

    I know, wasn't having a go.:50:

Why are people still going on as if the £2 million fee is a joke? We all know that players with one year left on their contracts are always going to go for a cheaper sum than normal. Add that to the fact that he is coming from Scotland, and the fact that he isn't our number one right back.

£2 million is a very decent fee.
