Adam Matthews

He's a right back.

He's playing left back because Izzys injured.

 

He has played at left back twice now for us and has been excellent in both games, one of them against Barcelona and the other against Aberdeen today.

I thought he was a bit shaky earlier on in the season (Spartak game comes to mind here), but he is definitely back to his best now. Top class player

 

Right back for me is his best position but i have no problem with him at left back either.

 

I understand that but i think Charlie Mulgrew would be 10x better there for now or to even bring a youth through, Think it puts alot of added and unnessicary pressure on Matthews!

 

More than twice, had a spell there last season.

 

He's quite comfortable there.

He plays there for his country as well.

Kind of suits Matthews to be playing at left-back just now given Lustig's great run of form recently.

I don't remember, but I'll take your word for it. The games that he's played there for us this season though, he's been immense in.

It's not easy having to deal with the likes of Pedro and Dani Alves bombarding down the wing constantly. Many of the top left backs in the world struggle when faced with such a task, but here you have a guy who isn't even playing in his natural position and still manages to keep them quiet for an entire 90 minutes. Speaks volumes about his ability.

 

Ended up with Messi on that side vs Barca. Who he handled brilliantly as well.

 

Being so versatile and able to play in both positions to a very high standard is fantastic and I wouldn't hesitate to let him play left or right.

 

I'm usually not a fan of fitting players into unnatural positions but Matthews certainly looks very good defensively on the left hand side, today as well as Barca. Wouldn't be surprised to see him on that side come Tuesday

We're used to seeing him at right-back but it's no secret that he's just as capable on the left.

 

Right back is Adam Matthews best position. I'd be interested to know what his gf's best position is.

 

Right back. Simple. Plays well wherever else we've played him but he's a RB. Maybe RWB

 

Definitely RB, but he can easily fit in at LB. He was so good against Barca because they rarely hit the by line. They nearly always cut inside, which was easier for him as they were coming on to his stronger foot.

Lennon puts him on the left when there's a winger who likes to cut inside. It happened often today as well. I don't think it's a where is he better, more of a where does he fit within the game plan on any given day.

 

Thought he was outstanding today, was unlucky not to score but had 2 assists. That right wing back role suits him down to the ground. We have a real top quality player and incredible to think we got him for nothing. In listing and Matthews we have two top quality right backs, been a while since we can say that

 

Poor * still hasn't scored has he? Looked desperate today, such a shame he never got on the end of that great thru ball from Ledley in the 1st half.
Everyone will go mad when he finally gets his goal!
