I have just been thinking about formations and suchlike for tonight, and was wondering what you fellas thought about playing 3 CB's.
Given we are stretched at Full Back, well Left-Back to be honest, why not play a 3-5-2 like we did during the start of O'Neils time. Caldwell - Loovens - McManus at the back, then you can start to shuffle the midfield about to suit.
Any thoughts?

aye might be a good shout you could set up with a team like this:
Caldwell McManus Loovens
Nakamura Robson Hartley McGeady
Maloney
Skippy Samaras -
Who would the wing backs be? Remember they have to defend which rules out a position for Maloney, Nakamura and McGeady. Not saying it couldn't work though.
If it were Caddis and Robson then it might work like the Agathe and Thompson I suppose. -

We'd just have the exact same problem we already have with LB... just with more useless CBs. =/ -

Cannot see WGS changing his 4-4-2 formation especially at home, although if preseason is anything to go by he might try something different away in Europe this season.
-
Do you not remember Caldwell at right back? He needs more cover than a wingback can offer. Maybe switching him and Loovens and dropping McManus for O'Dea, with Caddis and Robson (his eventual position, I think, as the years tick by) playing wingback could work. Would be hard to touch the exploits of Tosh and Jackie from 12/13 years ago, though.

Just thinking back to the way Agathe played that position...what a * great job he done for us there! Ok his end product wasnt always the best but he put in an absolutly mamoth shift up and down that right hand side

I think we'd get humped if we played an unfamiliar system against relatively unknown opposition.
-
Firstly, back 3s a totally different system that takes practice and there is no way you could give it its debut in a CL game.
Secondly its a fairly discredited system at the top level. Leaves big gaps behind in wide areas. Few use it now.
Thirdly you need that rare thing - a player with huge energy and pace who has the skill to play like a winger and the defensive abiltiy to play like a FB. I think Caddis and Hinkel (who I think would prefer it to RB) could play it but we have noone on the left side. Naylor could do it but IMO is too limited in an attacking sense to do it well. None of our current attacker could. Robson would be the best of a bad bunch but he is a bit old to play the high energy position.
Fourthly, you gain a 'hole' position but you lose two wide positions for guys who cant defend. So you would have Shaun, Aidan, Naka, Broon and maybe others all fighting over one spot. And for what? So we can have an extra CB. Defo not worth it. -
Guardiola has Barcelona playing this way with Pique, Marquez and Puyol we'll see how he get's on. Rijkaard tried it last year a couple of times and it came back to haunt them, they never won a game using it if i remember correctly.
I reckon 4-4-2 is fine for us just now, it's the personnel rather than the formation that isn't quite 100%. -

Our wingers are defensive enough to play with 3 at the back
-
If we played with Caddis and Robson as wing backs aye, no chance if it were Aiden and Naka we'd be destroyed the first time we met a semi decent team that knew anything about exploiting it.
-
My preferred formation, but not WGS' so that's that.
Caddis and Robson would play the role well imo. -

i like the 3-5-2 formation anyway.
we should have tried that in pre season 1st tho.and we can see if the players we have got can do the damage with it.
