I said he didn't have the cutting edge to be a playmaking midfielder. He doesn't. He has to work hard to compensate for that. Boo hoo.

    None taken.

I'm not going to derail this topic any further.

But why are you judging him as a playmaker?

I like Broony, always liked him. * me off a few times with some silly challenges but think he is overall a good player and an intergral part of our midfield.. I think part of the reason I like him so much as a lot of the guys I watch Celtic with don't rate him which usually causes me to go the opposite as I am contrary *.

Why would anyone say that £4.4m wasn't worth it for six years of service from a highly committed player, only now entering his prime? :39:

He's our captain though. And it's still only a fraction of our overall wage budget.

During the Mowbray season I'd have said Brown had definetley not been worth what we paid for him. But from then until present I'd say he's made up for it. Only thing I could say is, he could be scoring more goals. He used to bang them in every week for Hibs and I know he's playing a different role for us than he did at Hibs, but I still think he could and should be scoring more often.

Most he scored at Hibs was 8. That's not banging them in every week, he was never a goalscoring midfielder. He was more attacking though but thats down to his role in the team, as the Hearts 7-0 game proved he still has that in his locker.

I was away to say I must have missed the time when Brown was Ronaldo of the North in terms of goal return FFS! :)

He's not a born goalscorer....incisive, clinical finisher......never has been IMO, and never will be. The diamond at Hibs perhaps suited him a bit better, but his greatest talents lie elsewhere. 1 goal from him is a bonus for me, as opposed to fulfilling an expectation in any way.

He was a bit overrated at Hibs ( I though then and still do). Nowadays I am not sure we would have paid 4.4 million for him. Nevertheless over the 6 years he has matured a lot and that has probably why he has improved so much on the pitch. In spite of the silliness here and now (e.g. kicking out at Neymar) I still think he has matured quite a lot.
He has captained the team well for the last few years and is ceratinly a KEY player for us and certainly deserves the armband.

Despite not being the most technically gifted footballer the development of his all round game has allowed him to not look out of place whilst competing against midfielders who are of a higher quality than him. Although he's a player who puts in a shift and works hard to destroy the opposition's attacks he can also produce the occasional moment of real class in midfield and this added to his refusal to be intimidated by any opponent has made the transfer fee paid to be worthwhile in my opinion.

So with the news today that he's signed another 4 year contract, what's peoples thoughts on if the initial outlay was worth it?

I didn't think he was worth it then, I don't think he was worth it at any point in his Celtic career so far which is disappointing as you would have expected someone, that cost that much, at that age, to push on and be worth a lot more.

We probably will get value for money over the 10 years but still feel he missed his potential.

Got to remember thought, he has spent half his time here playing only 30 odd games a season.

He will probably retire as our player with most European apps and will probably get a lot more Scotland caps as well but now that he is bedded in as captain and the 'senior' man in the team he is starting to prove himself more and make up for lost time.

Would be nice to see how many assists and our win percentage with him in the team and without across his Celtic career.

He should score more goals as well but in his time the goal-scoring midfielder role has been taken by more-suited players.

Must add, can't fault him as a captain - I think only vs Barcelona has he ever let us done and we have had a lot of players from different nations set and set quickly in Scotland and he must be credited for that as well.

On his footballing ability I would say no but his steel, determination, drive and passion yes.

you really can't put a price on that *.

Edit: every team no matter how big or small can benefit from having a Scott Brown type player in their team.

Worth every £ we spent on the guy.
Yes not the most skillful in the team and some passes go astray but the mental hardness he brings into the team is outstanding and badly needed at times.
Drags the team up to a better level when he is in the team and can win us games just being in the team.
Great news he is here for another 4 years and look forward to see him extend that time as well.:50:
