St Johnstone v Celtic - TC Official Match Report

St Johnstone 1 - 4 Celtic
McDiarmid Park
Sunday January 24th 2010

A strong second half fight back from a resilient Celtic side in Perth was enough to cut Rangers lead at the top of the SPL to seven points. After going a goal down to a Liam Craig penalty early on, it took a double from Fortune and lone strikes from Samaras and McCourt to sink the Saints in the end.
The match was quite dull early on and it took a penalty to get things underway. Glenn Loovens, who was to recevie a nasty blow to the head later in the game, brought down Steven Milne in the area after ten minutes and Liam Craig coolly slotted the kick past Artur Boruc.

Celtic’s Season Starts Right HERE, Right NOW.

3 games in 6 days, with 9 points out of 9 required. Those are the numbers that face Celtic starting this Sunday, when they travel to McDiarmid Park to face St Johnstone.

Back in August, the Bhoys romped to a 5-2 victory against the Perth outfit. Summer signing Marc-Antoine Fortuné and the currently injured Shaun Maloney both scored doubles that day. However, any win will do in the current climate.

The Return of the Beautiful Game

The beautiful game returns to Celtic Park as Celtic entertain Falkirk on Saturday, the Bhoys first game since the one each draw with Rangers on the 3rd of January.

In the fortnight since our last game the squad has seen some movements with new faces being brought in and familiar ones moving on. Barry Robson, Willow Flood and Chris Killen have all left to join former manager Gordon Strachan at Middleborough while Gary Caldwell decided against joining them on the Riverside and instead opted for a move to English Premiership strugglers Wigan.

While four departed for pastures new, two signings were...

Caldwell Moves On

Celtic Football Club today confirmed the departure of centre back and ex-SFWA Player of the Year Gary Caldwell to Wigan on a four and a half year contract.

Caldwell had been in talks with Ex-Celtic manager Gordon Strachans Middlesbrough but the deal fell through and Caldwell decided to move to the English Premiership with Wigan.

Caldwell said "“It’s a massive wrench for me to leave a club like Celtic but I want to thank the club and all the fans for the support they’ve given me in my time there.

“But I’m a Wigan Athletic player now and I can’t wait to get started in the Premier League.”

Caldwell leaves with mixed feelings towards a player who in his time with Celtic lifted 2 league titles, a Scottish Cup and a Scottish League Cup. Many fans are glad to see the back of the player who has struggled to recapture his form...
