Pleading the Fifth, £6 Million Myths & Leigh Griffiths

The papers this week will be filled to the brim with reports concerning the aftermath of Saturday’s “treatment” of Neil Lennon by inebriated fans at the League Cup’s first semi final.

While the hope would be that the tragic minority involved – a minority determined to take the gloss off their team’s excellent performance on the park – would be identified and hauled in front of the authorities, the fear remains that they will disappear in to the ether.

Celtic v St. Mirren [IMG]

02/02/2014 (K.O 3pm)

Tomorrow sees Danny Lennon bring his 9th-placed Paisley “Buddies” to Celtic Park for the second game of the season between the two sides – Celtic having previously trounced their counterparts 4-0 at New St. Mirren Park. With not much success in recent years at Celtic Park, Danny Lennon will be hoping that his side come away with - at least - their dignity in tact and having given Celtic a tough game, whereas Neil Lennon will be hoping to come away with ALL three points, as well as overseeing his Bhoys put in a performance to give the home crowd entertainment.

Reports this morning indicate that an offer has been accepted for Leigh Griffiths, and that the player has arrived in Glasgow for contract talks.

Griffiths has been indentified as the goalscorer Neil Lennon wants for his squad, having scored 28 goals in all competitions last season while on loan at Hibernian. The Wolves man currently leads their scoring charts with 12 league goals this season, from a mere 17 league starts.

Meanwhile, Celtic reportedly have accepted an offer from Crystal Palace for midfield maestro Joe Ledley.

A busy day clearly lies ahead for the Club.

Celtic kept the ball well, playing with style throughout. During the first half, the side appeared ready to keep the ball all night. The midfield were particularly good, with Joe Ledley stringing all the plays together. On form like this, fans will be praying he signs a new deal. The Celts accumulating over 70% of the ball in the first 45 minutes.

Straight from the whistle, Celtic were on the front foot. Scott Brown exemplified this best, winning the first 50/50 of the game. The opposition did not appear prepared for the challenge that faced them. From back...

A little over 6 months ago, a relatively unknown Dutch defender walked through the front doors at Paradise to sign a 4 year contract with our beloved Hoops, and in the process join a team that had recently finished off their domestic season as league champions, and had also gone through a season which saw them re-establish themselves at the top table in Europe’s finest competition – scalping the likes of Barcelona and Spartak Moscow to reach the last 16 of the Champions League.

Arriving from the green and white of Dutch-based team FC Groningen, to Glasgow’s green and white in a deal worth a reported £2.4m (incidentally, the highest price Celtic have splashed out on any defender since the signing of Joos Valgaeren for £3m in 2001), Virgil van Dijk was allocated the number 5 jersey – previously worn by non-other than Mr Valgaeren himself!
