Later in McStays career our squad was shocking.

It matters more when you’re comparing players that played for the same team in the same position with the same captaincy.

    Is my point.

In completely different teams in different times, especially when the example I picked up on was regarding Lambert and those achievements - the shackling of Zidane and the CL - wasn’t with us.

Not a mythical creature in my eyes. I was at his debut at Pittodrie and saw him in the vast majority of games he played for the hoops home and away. Similar with Scott Brown. McStay was by far the better player.

McStay should have left Celtic in the early 90s to further his career and win more honours but thankfully he didn't.

If McStay had just a tad of arrogance he would have been World Class..

Anyone who seen him in him prime during the Centenary Season wouldn't even debate this.

Not even close imo, McStay was something else but played in some of the worst teams in our history.

You're entitled to your opinion. I'm not sure what age you are, but I'm 48 years old and that's why I can't comment on Bobby Murdoch as I have only seen a little footage of the Lions but have no first hand knowledge of his prowess.

I did, however, see almost every kick of the ball that both McStay and Lambert had in a Celtic Jersey - so from first hand knowledge of how the two took control of the midfield from those central positions I can honestly say that, despite Lamberts record at Dortmund, he couldn't lace McStays boots. The difference in class is a chasm.

I liked Lambert as a player - he was very tidy and seldom gave the ball away, but he wouldn't make the team of Celtic players I've watched play. He would actually struggle to make the bench if I'm honest.

    Merely my opinion though

I'm the same as you don't think Brown and McStay is a logical comparison, however Lambert and McStay is a much more viable comparison. I too witnessed virtually every kick of both from debut onwards..

Imo there isn't such a chasm as you suggest. Both were classy, Lambert was probably more defensively effective as a player but the Maestro was a beautiful, graceful footballer..

Close for me but McStay is the best midfielder I've see in the Hoops..

That's true, I just think with regards to Brown people talk about him as though he lacks ability or isn't that good of a footballer when really he's probably the best footballer we have in our current squad - not in terms of natural ability or technique but just what he brings to the team overall. Against Anderlecht, Bayern and countless other games in Europe he looked so comfortable at that level whereas a lot of our players that receive the plaudits for being so called "great footballers" were absolutely nowhere to be seen.

Also think Brown wouldn't have looked out of place in Martin O'Neill's team and I say that as someone who loved Lennon and Lambert.

    Older fans say McStay .

    Younger fans say Brown.

    The debate runs on.

    It’s a great debate.

Pretty sure that no amount of posts will change other posters views mind.

I’m 34 and chose the maestro btw

    Comes down a generational thing.

Nah. I went to my first Celtic game in the early 80’s.
I wouldn’t pick McStay over Brown. I think it’s too difficult to choose as my reasons in my other post.
It’s a nostalgia thing not generational.

It's not really. The younger guys didn't see McStay play and therefore are unable to make an informed judgement.

It's generational in the respect that there were players from the past that must have been unbelievably good but no-one is old enough to remember them properly. How good must James McGrory have been? His record was phenomenal but I can't judge him against Larsson because I didn't see him play.
