    My definition is that to be world class, you have to be one of the top ten (at least) players in your position at any given time, to be considered world class. I don’t think McStay is in that bracket yet I’ve seen loads of Celtic fans say he was.

    didn't see him play, but I can imagine it is like larsson, in that he probably wouldn't have been a first pick in a 25 man world squad, but certainly wouldn't have looked too out of place either. the term world class doesn't really have a solid meaning which is the problem

    Paul McStay was an awesome player at his peak. Maybe wrong but I felt he wasn't a very confident guy despite his skill. Think he could have been even better with a little more arrogance, but one of the best players we've had in my lifetime.

    So who where the 10 in the world better than him at that time in his position?

    McStay was class and his playing style and composure where 1st class. He played in a time when Rangers flooded their team with expensive English and European exports and outclassed them.

    I loved him for staying at Celtic but would also have loved him to show his ability abroad.

    Not that he was Meh! He was over rated definitely not world class.

    I do think that Lambert was underrated however but that not the question but I'm sure you'll agree with that.:37:

    I could've sworn he was wanted by numerous Serie A club's at various points when that league was the pinnacle..

    He chose to stay..

    Still looked good towards the end but didn't see him in his absolute prime..

    Yeah he was, he was good, very good at times ,don't get me wrong but he was hyped up imo....he certainly wasn't world class.

    Paul McStay was never world class and to suggest he was takes the shine off truly world class players we have had IMO.

    I’ve had this argument numerous times over the years on here though :56:

    That's not my definition of world class, mine's far more restrictive.

    However, using either method, I don't think Paul was world class ....... A Celtic legend, a great player, but when you think of the world class midfielders around the world during his career (Zidane, Rijkaard, Matthaus, Hagi, Prosinecki, M.Laudrup, Socrates, Platini) he was never in that class

    Only "world class" players I can think of since anyone from the Lions would be Larsson (naturally), Boruc and possibly, erm.......nah that's it.
