Been watching the epic Ken Burns Documentary on Country music.

I think this Hillbilly stuff is in my genes.

Modern classic of the horror genre. The middle third is a bit meh but the first and final thirds are sensational. Plus, that soundtrack.

    Pontypool

Started so well. Loved the idea of this zombie outbreak happening but our characters being unaware of what's going on. Just think it completely ran out of steam in the second half of the film. Had so much potential.

Incredible film. Will be an all time classic with a few iconic scenes that will always be remembered. Phoenix absolutely owned the role and the Score was incredible.

This will win some amount of awards.

    Joker

Excellent. Well worth checking out. Still think that Heath Ledger's Joker in The Dark Knight is the best, but this origin story is class and Pheonix is as always top notch. Brutal, tortured and textured, this is as much a film as it is worthy understudy and successor of Scorsese's King of Comedy. By far, Todd Phillips's most mature film, especially compared to hi mostly usual comic fare.

    Ad Astra

A virtual retelling of Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness novel (as is Apocalype Now in the Vietnam War setting), this is pretty much the same sort of thing, this time set in space. It's ok, but never does anything near enough to escape the shadow of that original source material or the superior Francis Ford Coppela film.

Aye and the French guy in the main role is someone you'd pass in the street and not think twice about but * help you if he turns up at your door. Hammy performance from Gary Oldman was only down in whole film. If you haven't seen it watch it today and thank me tomorrow.

    Midsommar

Easily the best horror film since It Follows. Cinematography, design, soundtrack everything was fantastic. Florence Pugh was phenomenal in it. Jordan Peele seems to get all the hype in horror just now cos he makes ‘black horror movies’ but he’s nowhere near Ari Aster.

    I Saw The Devil

Thriller/horror but more of a thriller. It’s good but a bit ridiculous at times and had the potential to be a really * good film.

    Crawl

Decent little horror film nothing special. Easy watch and the type of film you’ll stick on when you need something to watch and won’t get bored.

Loved Midsommar, and I typically dislike horrors.

    Gemini Man

This film just completely screamed 90's/early 2000's Bruckheimer actioner. Can't really comment about the visuals etc, but the story and the casting choices in general etc are all indicative of that. Not one of Ang Lee's best, but again perfectly fits alongside the others in this genre, such as Face/Off. It is ok without ever being something really special - just feels like it was made 20-odd years too late.

    Judy

OMFG, Renee Zellweger is simply incredible in this! You compltely forget that this is an actress playing the part, so completely does she emerse herself in the roie - that this is Judy Garland. She really is that good! Oscar Nomination 100% on it's way is the least she deserves (not that that is necessarily an accurate indicator of quality but in this case, like Glenn Close for the Wife last year, this is a nailed on certainty). The film itself is ok and the story it tells is both servicable and respectful, but it is Zellweger's performance that carries this and really elevates it as someithing worth investing in.

    The Day Will Come

A dark satire with some genuinely laugh out loud moments of absurdity that is all too possible and downright based in reality. Basically FBI and Homland security seem more preoccupied with creating terrorists which are then ready made to be 'brought down', than actually tracking down real terrorists. Passed the 6 laugh test - which is a rare enough feat as it is for most modern comedies more often than not fall well short of that mark.
