yeah! * right, lets just compare everything that we don't agree with to something completely unrelated and extreme to try and prove a point.

    It's about context.

The same debate has been had many times with the Dire Straits song 'Money for Nothing'

that little * with the earring and the make-up

Knopfler remains conflicted about that line. He argues that it is was used in the context of the obnoxious self-absorbed narrator of the song, but he understands the hurt it could cause - particularly as the song was simply an observation of a scene. The jury is still out for me on that one.

The bottom line is that the word * has always been a homophobic slur. To argue that it was vaguely acceptable in the 80's so it should somehow be allowed exemption from current values, is to argue that it should also be acceptable to talk about darkies and *'s nowadays. No. It's not.

The word * has absolutely no context in The Pogues & Kirtsy McColl song - it's a straight-up slur. I think I would therefore survive if it was cut when played on public broadcast. I suspect everyone else would too. Deal with it Cavemen!

A more interesting discussion surrounds Elvis Costello's song 'Olivers army'.

    one less white-*

That line is loaded with context and the song is an exploration of a controversial historical reality, so it (rightly in my opinion) continues to air uncensored.

As an aside, I noticed someone making mention of Eminem's use of the word *. I suspect it always has context when he uses it - insofar that he strikes me as someone desperately trying to convince the world he's something he's not!

It is about context. However an essential part of that context is the historical context. Whether you or I deem a term was acceptable in the 1980's or is now is not relevant. There is no "vaguely acceptable" about it these terms were routinely used on the radio and certainly on prime time tv and no even Mary Whitehouse gave a *. To deny this is to try and re-write history.

In doing so I think you do a disservice to all the people who suffered racist, sexist or homophobic abuse in these periods of time.

I also think in the current political climate and with the seeming rise of the right to try and deny these views existed far more prevalently than they do now is regressive and hinders attempts to try and prevent them from reasserting themselves.

I have seen TV programmes with a warning before them something along the lines of "please be aware the following programme contains some outdated language that may offend some people" for me that is sufficient as I happy to trust my fellow human beings to hear this and then make their own judgements on the language used in the programme.

For the record I think if you happened to be in a pub over Christmas and heard "Fairytale of New York" you would probably "survive".

I never said that I thought it was 'vaguely acceptable'.

I said 'to argue that it was it vaguely acceptable... '.

I then went on to give an example of why it couldn't be argued as acceptable (vaguely or otherwise).

    I agree with you.

    And yes, I would survive.

Apparently 'Baby it's cold outside' has been dropped by some Yank station because it encourages 'rape'.

Sounds like something manufactured by alt-right types to try and justify their constant "everybody is too PC and sensitive!!" crusade.

I believe it has been dropped from rotation from Christmas FM here in Dublin.
Christmas FM is a charity station that starts up about Dec 1st and when you message in the proceeds go to a yearly nominated charity. This year Temple St Childrens Hospital.
Terrible stuff, best Christmas rape song ever.
