CELTIC Under-17s powered to Glasgow Cup glory for the third year running with an emphatic 4-0 win over Rangers at Ibrox tonight (Thursday).
After a tense end-to-end opening, Michael O’Halloran’s side went on to dominate the derby clash and score two clinical strikes in the first-half through Mikey Johnston and Broque Watson.
Shaun Bowers’ charging run and deflected finish early in the second-half put the Celts completely in charge before substitute Kieran Patrick-Campbell capped off an excellent performance from the Bhoys with a chipped finish two minutes before the end.
The Celts saw out the final stages in comfortable fashion to retain the historic trophy, despite a late surge from the Ibrox side, and they will hope to carry their positive momentum forward into the league as the title race approaches its conclusion in the coming weeks
The match started with all the typical fervour of a Glasgow derby with both teams trading chances in the opening minutes.
The Bhoys spurned a chance to break the deadlock after 16 minutes when Ewan Henderson’s shot was only partially saved by Kieran Wright but the midfielder’s rebounded header was hooked off the line by the home defence.
It wasn’t long until O’Halloran’s side did take the lead, however, and it came from brilliant individual skill from Johnston in the box. The diminutive attacker had done well to gather in the area and beat his man but he lost his footing, only to regain his composure, beat his marker again and fire a stunning left-footed shot into the net past Wright.
The Ibrox outfit almost garnered an equaliser through Liam Burt but McAdams did well to tip the striker’s effort round the post.
Celtic almost doubled their lead on the half-hour mark when clever wing play from the lively Jack Aitchison allowed him to slip in Kerr McInroy but his first-time flick crept inches wide.
The end-to-end nature of the play continued as McAdams was called into action again, saving well from Jamie Barjonas’ powerful free-kick, but the Bhoys deservedly added to their advantage on 38 minutes thanks to strong play from Aitchison on the left and clinical finishing from Broque Watson.
Aitchison’s skill took him past Houston on the flank and his shot was parried into the six yard box where Watson pounced to put the Hoops 2-0 up at the break.
Rangers were resurgent after the interval with Burt and Rudden working room to shoot inside the box as the home team earned what seemed like a relentless stream of corners from the restart.
Celtic held firm, however, and powered into an emphatic 3-0 lead against the home side with a stunning counter-attack down the right which saw full-back Bowers intercept a Rangers attack on the flank and burst forward over the half-way line with space ahead of him.
The back-tracking Rangers defence eventually got within range for a tackle but the Hoops youngster showed excellent composure to get the shot away, which deflected off the sliding challenge of a defender and bounced over Wright in goals to put the Celts utterly in control.
The goalscorer was forced to leave the field shortly after as he picked up a knock and he was replaced by Robbie Deas in defence. Rangers also made a double switch, with Burt coming off for Sam Jamieson and Andrew Dallas making way for Jack Adamson after the hour mark.
The home team passed up two great chances to get back into the game with 20 minutes left, with Rudden’s back-header bouncing wide before the striker had a low shot saved by McAdams.
The match then became stretched as it neared the end and the Hoops defence had to contend with a late onslaught from the home team but it was Celtic who had the final say with substitute Campbell supplying a sublime finish to a clinical counter-attack.
McAdams remained composed in goal to help the Bhoys see out the game, with Lewis Bell and Rory McInroy doing well in midfield to break up attacks from the home side and secure a sensational victory for Celtic.

CELTIC Under-17s coach Michael O’Halloran couldn’t disguise his delight after watching his team sensationally sweep aside city rivals Rangers 4-0 at Ibrox tonight to lift the Glasgow Cup for the third successive time.
The young Hoops burst from the blocks to race into a two-goal lead at the interval thanks to a superb solo effort from Michael Johnstone and a predatory finish from Broque Watson.
After soaking up some early pressure from home side in the second half, Shaun Bowers made it 3-0 after a lung-bursting run down the right, before substitute Kieran Patrick Campbell crowned off the triumph with an emphatic finish as the clock ticked down.
There were memorable scenes following the final whistle as captain Lewis Bell lifted the historic trophy and the celebrations got into full swing.
It wasn't just a moment to savour for the players but also the coaching and backroom staff - O'Halloran, John McLaughlan, George McCluskey, Ryan Marshall, Scott Breddy and Danny Friel.
Speaking exclusively to Celtic TV, O’Halloran heaped praise on his young charges for perfectly executing their game-plan and producing an outstanding performance on the big stage.
He said: “I’m absolutely ecstatic. Everything we asked them to do tonight, they stuck to those tasks. Their effort and enthusiasm for the game, their desire to go and play, allied with the fact they played some nice football was very pleasing.
“We worked on the game-plan for a number of days, looking at it defensively and offensively, and we thought they stuck to it pretty rigidly and that showed in the result we got tonight.
“It was great from the boys’ point of view that they took the things on board that we have worked on and put it into practice on the pitch.
“We have a very young team and a number of these boys can play in the competition next season, so it was fantastic for them to come here under pressure and put in a performance like that. It was absolutely brilliant.
“The pressure they bring on themselves is enough, as they want to go and win and do well, so we try not to heap too much on them and to encourage them to go and play and enjoy the game," continued the coach.
“It will be learning curve for them and is all part of their development. It’s not often they get to play in big competitions like this in a big stadium so fair play to them for managing to cope with that pressure and get on with the game.
“We have scored four great goals but I felt we defended really stoutly and well, making sure we were narrow and pressed at the right times. Rangers are a very good team and very quick and good at what they do. We had to press them and I felt we did that at the right times, denying them the opportunity to get forward.
“They had good possession at times but, defensively, we coped very well and we built on that to get our opportunities and breaks forward to score the goals.
“I’m not going to single any goal out because every one of them was worth its weight in gold, they were just absolutely fantastic.
The credit goes to all the goalscorers, but it was a team performance. “That’s what it’s all about. The talk from myself and John McLaughlan was to go out there and work as a team.
“While one or two might shine, an individual doesn’t get to shine without his team-mates backing him and supporting him and that encompassed every single one of the players involved tonight, including those on the bench.”
The young Hoops will now aim to use their stunning success to drive them onto defending their league title, with a vital league meeting with Forth Valley up next.
“We have five matches left and we can only take care of the next one which is Forth Valley on Tuesday evening, that’s the most important game of the season now," said O'Halloran.
“We have put this one to bed and we will look ahead to Forth Valley once we reassemble tomorrow for training and do our recovery.
"If we can do well on Tuesday then hopefully we can go and secure the title again at the end of the season again. But, as the cliché says, it’s one game at a time and we won’t look any further ahead than Forth Valley”.

I didn't realise Michael O'Halloran Snr is actually the Under 17's coach. Whats the bet he ends up at Ibrox with his boy?
