I thought id drop yous over a wee thread of my boat build since i put it on other forums im on, i thought why not here.

I thought id have a crack at building one of these boats after building a canoe at end last summer

This boat ive been building is a cedarstrip boat that gets sealed in see through fiberglass and coated in a few coats of epoxy resin then another few coats of marine varnish. I bought 13 lenghts of western red cedar 4x1 and 1 length of ash at 6x1.5inch. I had to plane all teh cedar through a planning table because they where sold rough. after they were planned , they were just over 3/4inch and i had to rip all teh cedar into 6mm strips. This was a tiedious job !. I had to make up my own table saw with my cicular saw because i dont have one. I turned the table sww upside down and built a table out of 1/2inch ply and it cut the cedar perfect . Once i started riping the ash through it, the teh fun started because i balled my saw up and done teh brushings in and had to get new ones to fix it ffs.

Next i had to run teh strips through a bead and cove bit on my homemade router table. I done the same as my table saw only this time i turned my handheld router upside down and used this. It worked ok untill i was nearly finished then it packed in, prob as it was an old one lying about teh shed years but i went out and bought a cheap new one out of argos to finish teh job. Heres a pic of teh router bits £50 each these were :(

Next i got some mdf 1/2 inch and cut out my station sthat i had to bend teh strips around.

Here below i had to bend some ash strips(4mm) around my stem station and fill with epoxy to bond it all together. This was a * of a job and i didnt even have gloves and got teh epoxy all over me and it burnt my * hands :(

Here below is 2 1.5 inch thick pieces of pine for my transom(bcak of teh boat). I had to bond these together because i couldnt get any the sizes i was looking. I bonded them with thickend epoxy

    Beveling the transom

Heres when it all took shape. I had to staple all my strips to the stations and had to use evostick glue to glue tehm all together.

Heres it sanded just before teh sealer coat of epoxy

Here below is a sealer coat of epoxy resin. The reason for teh sealer coat is that its suppose to stop air bubbles when you go to fiberglas sit with epoxy but this didnt stop mine from having a few bubbles. Mines was todo with the fact that i applied mine at a rising temp instead of waiting till teh temp was falling. I later found this out after i made teh mistake but sorted it with sanding them out.

Heres it glassed with 4 coats of epoxy and this is when i attached my keel/skeg on with some thickened epoxy. I have still to sand and varnish the outside of the hull but ive to wait a week or 2 for teh epoxy to set properly.

Here i turned the hull over for sanding. This is a real * of a job because it takes ages and teh dust gets everywhere.

This is where im at now. Ive still to finish sanding teh inside and tehn fiberglass it with a few coats of epoxy. Ive got some solid oak for my seats. I bought it at 1inch thick and i had to sand them to 1/2 in and 1 at just under 3/4 inch. That was another * of a job as i had to do it with a hand planer.

Ive also some ash for the gunwhales(hand rails around top of boat). Once the inside hull is glassed this is my next job then seats after that, a few coats of varnish, let dry for a few days then of to the river to catch some lovely salmon ;)

Here below is a sealer coat of epoxy resin i have to put on before i do teh fiberglass coat. The reason behind this is that it ssuppose to stop teh cedar from gassing because it can let off a gas and air bubbles get trapped under teh cloth and theyre a * to get out. I also sanded the transom before i seal it with some fiberglass cloth also.

Not great pics thou because you can see teh flash on the wet epoxy

Ive got all the inside/outside all sanded with 120grit sand paper ready for varnish. If i ever see another sheet of sand paper im going to go crazy, ive went through alot of round oribital sandpaper on this boat. Teh thing that annoys me with the sand paper i buy is that after awhile of sanding, the pad just seems to fly off and wont stick anymore even thou theres plenty use left of the sand on the front. These arent even the cheap versions either. they set me back 1euro a sheet and i think ive used about 50-60 of these all throughout the boat.

Iv now got my seat cleats in for my oak seats to rest on. I made up some thickend epoxy with some epoxy dust i had, some of my da's talcum powder and some cedar saw dust. I was suppose to use some epoxy filler but i ran out so just came up with this idea, hope it works, lol.

I only had enough clamps to put the inner/outer gunnels on and attached with some epoxy and screws. Ill be doing the otherside tomorrow and will also put some fiberglass on my seat cleats to give it more strength. Once the other side of gunnels are on, all ive to do is scribe and cut my oak seats out and varnish the whole boat, attach the seats and im ready for the water. Well when i say im ready, ive still to make my oars. Ive bought some 2x2inch pine and will be making them out of these and will also use some cedar and ask that i have left over for the tips of the oars. Im hoping to have it finished by teh weekend and if not, early next week so keep an eye out for its maiden voyage. Hope i get good weather here in ireland for it because if i do, im getting a few bottles of magners cider, loads of ice and hitting teh river for a full days fishing to relax on my boat and find some places wheres good to fish where i cant get to by foot.

Heres the inside an gunnels all varnished with marine varish. Ive all the seats varnished as well but still have to set them in with some thickend epoxy resin. Here below is also me making up 2 7ft oars from pine, i have them finished now but dont have pictures but will get a few up soon. They look like * all now but they turned out great and im well pleased with my 1st attempt at making a set

Im naming it AWB after Admiral william Brown. Youve prob heard the song by the wolfetones. The reason why i named it this is because hes from where i live at teh moment and also learned to sail where i fish for salmon by his uncle at 7 yrs of age. The song is also one of my favourites so thought why not name the boat it seeing its unlucky to take a boat out without getting named and thought that was the perfect name for it.
