NewsoftheWorld_Scotland: Shock as teen pupils fall pregnant

TWELVE girls at a top Catholic school have fallen pregnant at the same time.
The pupils — all believed to be under 16 — have stunned teachers at St Andrew’s RC Secondary in Carntyne, Glasgow.

The shocking tale mirrors a bizarre pregnancy pact between 17 girls at a Catholic school in Massachusetts, USA, which made headlines across the globe last week. News of the Glasgow cluster comes after it was revealed there were a staggering 21 girls pregnant under the age of 14 in Scotland during 2006.
Last night one parent blasted: “It’s outrageous — half the school must have been at it like rabbits.”
WORRIED parents at a top Catholic school fear ante- natal classes will have to be added to the timetable — after a string of pupils fell pregnant.
A shocking TWELVE girls at St Andrew’s RC School, in Carntyne, Glasgow, are currently expecting babies.
The youngsters — all believed to be 16 or under — are being closely monitored by the school’s pastoral care staff and in-house nurses.
A school insider said ALL 12 are planning to keep their babies.
She said: “Everyone was in total shock as the news of more and more pregnancies emerged.
“There’s always been a high pupil pregnancy rate at the school but we’ve never found ourselves in a situation like this before.
“It’s not unusual for one, maybe two girls a year to fall pregnant but not 12 of them at the same time.”
She added: “First it was a few girls who were walking in to school patting swollen stomachs, then there was a whole load of them.
“If the girls keep going at this rate, they’re going to have to put ante-natal classes on the timetable.

“The pregnant girls look really strange walking round the corridors with their bumps sticking out from under their school uniforms.
“Some are entering the final stages of pregnancyso they’re getting ready to give birth very soon.
“Instead of discussing grades they’re chatting about baby names and prams.

“The fear is that with the school holidays coming up, more girls could be back at the start of next term up the duff too.”
Today’s shocking tale mirrors the bizarre pregnancy pact that was uncovered at a Catholic school in America a week ago.
Seventeen pupils at Gloucester High in Massachusetts fell pregnant at the same time so that they could raise their babies together.
Staff at the school blamed Hollywood films such as Juno for glamorising teen pregnancies.

But sources at St Andrew’s insist that the spate of teen pregnancies at the school was NOT planned.
Our insider revealed: “Some of the girls are friends but there’s no suggestion that there was some sort of pregnancy pact — it’s just an unfortunate coincidence.”
The source said Social Services had to be informed of the pregnancies, adding: “The girls’ ages mean that the fathers’ identities are a sensitive area.
“It’s against the law to have * with a minor and no one knows if the police will get involved.”
Last night, one young single mum slammed the St Andrew’s pupils for having unprotected *.
Sammy Bentley appeared in a Scottish Executive DVD, 9 Months After, aimed at reducing Scotland’s high teen pregnancy rate.
The 21-year-old of Knightswood, Glasgow, hit out: “I could murder these girls — they are so stupid.
“They don’t appreciate how much work is involved in having a baby. You have to be there for them 24/7. They can forget about visiting the pictures with their pals or dates with boys because their babies will be hungry and crying.”
Sammy the pregnant pupils to be made to shadow single mums to see what they’re up against.

She added: “That would bring teen pregnancy rates down. I mean, 12 girls in one school? I’ve never heard of such a high number.”
St Andrew’* the headlines in 2006 after it was given top marks by government inspectors and named best school in Scotland.

It outstripped many of the country’s top private schools despite being located in one of the most deprived areas of Glasgow. Bruce Malone, 57 — headmaster at the school for 16 years — was given particular praise for his promotion of achievement and personal and social development.
On the school website, he writes: “After their years in our school we would hope to have developed solid well-adjusted and educated citizens with strong moral values.”
But our source said he will be secretly fizzing at the development.
She said: “This negative publicity is the last thing he will want.”
The pregnancy cluster has also sparked concern among parents of St Andrew’s pupils.
One raged: “Half the school must have been at it like rabbits for 12 of them to end up pregnant.
“It sounds like they’ve been copying each other; like a baby is the latest fashion accessory.”

In February, we told how brawling St Andrew’s pupils were involved in a gang fight at a careers fair at the SECC in Glasgow.

And in March, chemistry teacher Olusegun Komolafe was given a warning for showing pupils how to gas themselves with carbon monoxide.
The shocking news comes in the same week it was revealed that almost 800 under-16s fell pregnant in Scotland in 2006 — with 21 of them under 14.
Last night Glasgow City Council said they were unaware of the situation. The Catholic Church refused to comment.

Kids are * dumb these days, not a brain cell between them. They probably cant wait to get there child benefit to spend it on a new mobile phone or some make-up. Where's the * education, the use of protection, thats another 12 kids that we have to fork out of our own pockets to feed and clothe.

What a waste of young lives.....it's actually quite sickening. As that girl said ..........wait until they realise that they haven't got a life anymore. They have given up the best years of their life and instead of talking boyfriends, parties and sleepovers they will be walking around with this little living reminder who will be dependant on them for the next 16 yrs. Very depressing :54:

That Bruce Malone was deputy head of St. Ninians when I was there all those years ago, couldn't stand the guy. Sounds like something that's going to spread all over the country, they really ARE that stupid.

never make a life changing non-reversable decision at 14 or whatever. Most things like choice of course, career etc can be reversed if you put in effort but kids is one you cant (getting a serious criminal record is another). KIds will dominate your life for 20+ years. I think most of the older TC people would agree that you bear no resemblance as a person at 14 to what you will be 10 years later or so. Pretty well everything you thought was important at that age will mean nothing to you 10 years later. Your still a kid at that age. Girls that stupid should have a contraceptice implant fitted. I think in an ideal world nobody should be having kids till they are at least 24 or so when they are standing on their own 2 feet and have matured a bit.

Personally I would refuse them council accomodation and force them to live with their parents and always press charges on the fathers (it is statutory rape) giving them community service and cutting their benifits for a while. As for the * ones who go around getting 2 or 3 girls up the duff when they are about 15, they should be jailed for a year or two for statutory rape. People need to learn that there is nothing but misery in being so irresaponsable. Why should we fund people who have kids with no reference to their circumastances. That is a big downside of the welfare state. It encounrage irresponsibility and the idea you get something for nothing is rife.
