Old Firm fans' chants could cost clubs dear

<!-- google_ad_section_start --><!-- Article Start -->OffIcials at Rangers and Celtic could find themselves in trouble today after thousands of Old Firm fans belted out banned anthems yesterday - within earshot of Uefa President, Michel Platini.

Renditions of The Billy Boys by Rangers supporters and chants in support of the IRA by the home fans could land both clubs in the dock.

On top of that, a firework was thrown onto the Parkhead pitch following a Rangers goal and 13 people were arres

ted for being drunk and disorderly and on breach of the peace charges.

Last night, the Scottish Premier League said it would be studying the report of their match delegate before it "takes any action that is appropriate".

Before the lunch-time encounter - the first Old Firm clash of the season - Celtic had rolled out the red carpet for Platini the former French international now running the governing body of European football.

Both the Uefa and French flags were flown above the North Stand at Celtic Park in honour of their VIP guest.

And billboards all around the pitch proclaimed: "Celtic Football Club Welcomes Michel Platini to Paradise."

Yet within seconds of kick-off, Rangers supporters sang The Billy Boys which their own chief executive has begged them to bin. They followed that up with "The Famine Song" about the humanitarian disaster in Ireland in the middle of the 19th Century.

Celtic fans were also involved in unsavoury chants, with a section known as The Green Brigade invoking a song that proclaims support for the IRA.

I was in the middle between Rangers and the GB (LL lower) and I could clearly hear the huns' songs of evil and hatred. The GB did not sing much wrong as far as I am aware. Some songs (such as * Maley) had the dodgy add ons (by a tiny minority of the support) and the Celtic Symphony ended once with oh ah up the ra, but that is it I think (and I don't think the GB is to blame here - it were probable other set of supporters). I also heard BOTOB and maybe Sean South (cannot remember), but this is not sectarian at all. Much ado about nothing.

Platini should better worry about real hooligans.

    Celtic fans sang NOTHING sectarian.

The huns sang SECTARIAN songs. Some journos should try and read the * dictionary instead of trying to make articles 'even out' with 'honest mistakes' in terminology.

    Pathetic.

Can someone please tell me what sectarian songs were sung? Can't say I heard any.

(apart from when I listened to the stuff sung by the shame)

The Billy Boys (sectarian) was very audible on the telly. The famine song isn't sectarian. It's racist.

This story is just the usual crap by an uneducated media. If your going to write on this subject you should at least do some research and understand the lyrics of the songs. Support of the IRA in songs?? I didn't hear it! Scotlands shame came with a mission and shouted their bile from the start. If Platini thinks this is bad he should go to a few games in Italy!

This is once again journalists trying to make out both are as bad as each other. Another sad attempt to "even the score".

We cannot be compared to the huns for the songs we sing. There is absolutely no comparison.

They are the most bigoted football fans in world football, in fact they are the most bigoted football club in world football.

To attempt to tar us with that brush speaks more about the * who print it.

how is singing 'ooh ah up the ra' comparable to singing 'up to our knees in * blood'?

pile of *.can't have the huns looking bad by themselves so have to involve us in it as per usual.everything they sing is scummy

Let's be honest, if either club get chinned for this, and by law they should, then it's a bit of a mockery of the system.

We all know fine well how riotous the crowds in Italy are and other European countries are much wilder than us and yet you don't hear as much knuckle rapping doled out to them.

There were chants of IRA during the Fields, and the occassional ooh ah up the RA. Nowhere near as much as the huns but still an offence at football grounds now I'm afraid

I also don't think for a second Platini was there to pry on what goes on and if he knows the sectarian song book I would be shocked.
