I know that Dougie MacLean is a big proponent of Scottish independence, and has written a number of songs on that theme. There's a few more out there of the same ilk, though he's certainly the most well known.

Sorry lads for the 2 year bump, but in my semi drunken state I googled " scottish rebel songs". And this thread came up.
So what is there? (just mind there is plenty Irish and Scottish songs that get played in twine)

But I was actually looking for some Scottish songs (apart fae the Corries> * Bless them.lol). Think because Scotland was lost so long ago (centuries) then there aren't really done anymore. Unlike Irish songs where there has been some (a lot) written over the last century - (few decades).

Anyway, apologies again but it should be discussed. :icon_mrgreen:

Scottish folk music tends to veer towards this. It doesn't carry the same implications of Irish rebel music and I think that "rebel music" is probably the wrong term to use for that reason.

Now, I reckon that most of it is provincial, shortbread tin rubbish, but I do think that Robert Burns' "Is There For Honest Poverty" carries the right message:

Leaving out all the shortbread sillyness that followed him, Burns was way ahead of his time.

Is the Bonnie banks of Loch Lomond not a patriot song about 2 brothers, one of them being sentenced to death by the English?

    Yes.

There are some brilliant versions by Luke Kelly of Scottish songs I'd highly recommend. Freedom Come All Ye, Parcel of Rogues and The Scottish Breakaway are all great (although The Scottish Breakaway is sung to a tune probably familiar...)

The Corries take a bit of a slagging but some of the stuff they've done is excellent. Killiecrankie, Massacre of Glencoe and Dawning of the Day are 3 of my favourites.

"Oh Caledonia, we are your sons, and will again be free."

    Here's hoping.

This is one i would to have as the Scottish National Anthem. Imagine having an international with the drums sounding and the crowd competing with the drums. Brilliant.
Its called A' The Blue Bonnets sung by the Corries.
It's about The Scottish Borderers defending Scotland against English invaders and was written by Sir Walter Scott.

Her is the link. Play it loud.
