Ross Doohan

CELTIC are considering a move for Aberdeen’s out-of-contract goalkeeper Ross Doohan.

Entering the final 12 months of his Parkhead contract current third choice Scott Bain could go in search of first team football after the Scottish Cup Final and Doohan features on a list of potential replacements.

Obliged to name eight homegrown Scots in their Champions League squad under UEFA regulations, four of the players must stem from a club’s own youth system. A graduate of Celtic’s Lennoxtown academy Doohan spent seven years at the champions between 2015 and 2022 and, after 18 first team appearances for Jimmy Thelin’s side this season, ticks the boxes.

Signed from Forest Green Rovers in 2023 the 27-year-old deputised for Pittodrie number one Dimitar Mitov, but was displaced for the Scottish Cup semi-final win over Hearts

Doohan’s Pittodrie deal is due to expire in the summer with Thelin on record as saying that the contract talks are ongoing. Herald Sport understands, however, that Aberdeen are working on signing at least one keeper this summer, with third pick Tom Ritchie also set to depart the club. Ironically, Doohan’s final game for the club could come against Celtic in the Scottish Cup Final Hampden on May 24.

  2. No issue as a homegrown backup to the backup..

  3. Yeah! We'd need someone not dissimilar to Bain, knowing they'd only get called on infrequently and it'd be high pressure when they are... Making them another homegrown for Europe is a big bonus! :50:

  4. He wouldn’t just be league trained like Bain he would be club trained too. If Bain wants to go it would make sense.

Unrelated but I actually wonder if there might be something in the Ajer chat, as he counts as club trained because we signed him when he was 16 and played here for us and Killie for more than 3 years before his 21st birthday. He seems to have lost his spot at Brentford to that new young guy who is tearing it up.

  5. I don't particularly rate him, but he's far better than Bain and would help with the homegrown quota.

  6. Poster on the Huddleboard saying Bainiac is signing for Ayr United

  7. I don't think he is good enough for Celtic. I think Bain is better even.

  8. Makes sense in a long term sense our current club grown is,
    Calmac
    KT
    Forrest
    Ralston
    Murray
    Welsh

One is probably entering his final season and Welsh and or Murray go.

On top of that Taylor, McCowan and Bain our nation trained.

You have to submit 3 keepers for Europe so you may as well use club trained.

3rd choice GK at a decent sized club must be the cushiest job in the world. Can easily sit there in to their mid to late 30's hoovering up the cash, doing nowt because every club needs a 3rd choice. Bain has had the guts of 2 million quid from us for catching balls in training.

  9. Yeah Bain hasn't done badly. But PL third choices earn far more, some of 30kpw to not play (looking at Butland). Scott Carson has two CL winners medals and several league winners medals for doing * all.

  10. No real issue although it doesn't exactly give any of our young keepers currently at the club much encouragement that we would rather bring back someone previously deemed not good enough here.

  11. Aye, just a box ticking exercise. Get him in.

  12. If I was a youth player I wouldn't want to be third choice keeper. The chances of two keepers injured is so low, that even if that did happen the club would probably arrange an emergency loan. You'd never develop ever and the reality is you're better off getting a loan to Scottish Championship or trying for a transfer to League 1 or 2.

  13. Decent enough goalie domestically, would happily bring him back in for the quota.

  14. You could argue the same for a GK at 27. Why would he want to be 3rd choice as well other than the wages. Goes both ways.

Anyway I'm not overly arsed either way.
