Till 40? I think you can see him starting to slow down right now. He relies more on physicallity, I think that will fail first.

No chance mate, guy is a * freak in terms of physicality.

Aye, like all humans on this earth he will become slower, and he will decline. But a slower Ronaldo in decline would still ultimately be a far superior player to most on the world stage in their 20's (for example).

Like you say, Ronaldo has had to re-invent himself - which he has done extremely successfully.

Messi has yet to experience decline, or had to reinvent himself - which will obviously happen - but he'll go further down in midfield to an Iniesta-type role I'd imagine.

Whatever way you look at it, these two guys are simply wonderful talents, and over the years watching them has been nothing but a majestic pleasure, which I hope continues for many a year to come.

Haha I think the split in opinions is worldwide but that's just how good both them are.

I'd agree and say Messi is more adaptable and can play various positions and they've both done it at the top level no questions asked. I think could replace any forward in any team and score goals for fun, I don't think he would need to adapt for many teams, maybe guardiola.

The big difference that i see is Ronaldo could play for Burnley stoke wba man city Utd etc and be phenomenal, I genuinely don't know if Messi could. I could imagine him struggling in a team that don't play a creative style of football and still score 40+ goals. That's my reason for preferring Ronaldo. Doesn't mean Messi isn't technically a better player and more all round but I prefer Ronaldo and I think he offers more to a team.

Just my opinion though, like you said everyone's is different when it comes to them two.

Messi would walk into any team in history and instantly be the best player at the club.

Few things wind me up like this ‘debate’. Messi is streets ahead.

I think Ronaldo has already badly declined, Lewandowski and Cavani are already better than Ronaldo now and have been for probably a good year.If you are wanting a big goalscorer to lead the line they are scoring as many goals now and are faster(and its not like they are particularly fast), stronger and better allrounders now, Ronaldo now rarely runs especially on the ball or beats anyone seems to play like he's on energy saving mode where he will only run when he has a chance to get into a goalscoring position, other than that he avoids getting involved in anything.

I doubt for example that Neymar, De Bruyne or Hazard or anyone will be better than Messi any time soon.

This is the best way to explain it. Messi does so much for Barca/Argentina beyond being the man to score the goals (which he is for the most part too), he's basically the main creator for both Barca and Argentina as well as the main goal-scorer. He's had more assists than anyone in world football over the last 10 years. He helps to dictate play and set the tempo. The only time Ronaldo drops into midfield is when he's been out of the game for a large period and feels he needs to get some touches.

The time Barca beat Real 5-0 in 2011, Messi was man of the match yet wasn't even on the score sheet that day. In the 2015 Champions League final, Messi was man of the match and didn't score a goal either. There's a video on youtube of Messi being "denied assists" due to poor finishing or good goalkeeping, it's unbelievable the chances he creates for his teammates. Then you have to remember on top of that he's one of the top 2 greatest goalscorers of his generation. The guy is an absolute phenomenon as an all rounder.

He could actually take over Ronaldo this year if Ronaldo doesn't pick up his form soon.

I doubt he will score another 44 goals this season to equal what Ronaldo is currently on and that's without Ronaldo scoring another goal this season

Since Ronaldo signed for Real Madrid Messi has played 33 more games and he's scored 27 more goals and made 54 assists more than Ronaldo. Ronaldo has scored 21 penalties more than Messi, so if they'd never took a penalty Messi would have scored 48 goals more than him.

Mental how good Messi's stats are.

Don't know why this argument is still a 'thing' in the world of football.

Messi has proven this season that his talent far outmatches Ronaldo. If the latter really wad the greatest ever Real wouldn't be considering punting him so quick just to get a new posing * in like Neymar because they know he is on the decline rapid.

Which is what will happen within the next year I feel.

Messi breaks his duck against Chelsea last night and brings him up to 50 goals behind Ronaldo.

    Ronaldo 620
    Messi 570
