We stopped around the time Fergus McCann took over. Prior to that, Celtic was wearing numbers on the jerseys for European competitions, but from the beginning of the 1994/95 season Celtic were forced to put the number on the jersey for domestic competitions also.

Apparently some referee made a balls up and booked the wrong player and his feaeble excuse was that he could not identify the correct offending player. As a result The Scottish Football League instructed Celtic to wear numbers on their shirts. At first Celtic tried to get around this by putting the numbers on the sleeves, but the SFL were more than a little miffed (shall we say) & specified that they needed to be attached tot he back of the shirts.

Further to the above... 27 August 1994 - Celtic wear numbers on the back of their shirts for the first time in a domestic match... in a 2-0 hunskelping at Ipox.

I'd love to go back to no number on the shirts and the big number on the shorts. No squad names on the back of the shirts either. I always used to think it made Celtic look really different when they had that.

There's too much money to be made nowadays by printing numbers and names on to shirts so the traditionalists like me will just have to make do with the memories. :87:

Just to add that the first numbers we put on the shirts were green with a white border which the ref during play would barely be able to make out anyway :56: I'm sure we were told to put them on a big white square the following season

    I'm not picky.
You can see Celtic fans celebrating in the background there and if it's the free kick I'm thinking of, weren't we "banned" from the *-pit for that match due to Moonbeams banning us for "damaging chairs" from the last time we were there? Unless he scored more than just one free kick at Mordor :icon_mrgreen:

The reason that match sticks with me is because I remember thinking to myself that it would be fantastic if we win after him banning us from attending that match - and we did; 2-0. When he scored there was complete silence (apart from the cheering at the bench) and it was superb seeing that.

It was beautiful and I think to top it off I think it was the first time we had won at Mordor for a few years as well. Was an all round excellent day :icon_mrgreen:

He done it twice that year. The game we were banned ended 1-1 (93-94 season)

That game in that picture is probably from the first game of the following season (94-95)

The game in the photo was a 2-0 win at Ibrox in August 1994 with Collins (free kick) and McStay the scorers. We didn't have numbers on the shirts for the game we were banned from the shitpit.

The match we were banned from the shitpit was the previous season in April 1994, John Collins scored a very similar free kick and the match ended 1-1
