Mowbray Dismisses Commons Link as Nonsense

The Summer transfer window always brings with it a rumour mill, the majority of which contains information from “sources” which turn out to be unsubstantiated drivel.

Today, Celtic gaffer Tony Mowbray condemned links with the club and Derby’s Kris Commons to the transfer rumour skip, stating I saw that running the other day and I'm not sure where that has come from. He’s not a player we have discussed.”

Commons - NOT on his way.

This Newswriter witnessed a relative feeding frenzy yesterday afternoon, following on from supposed “confirmation” on an internet forum that the Bhoys had lodged a £3.5 million bid for Commons. To say I was shocked was an understatement – “where would he fit in” I asked myself, while hoping beyond hope that monetary sum being discussed had been a typo.

Only an hour later, and it was confirmed – there had been no bid, indeed, there had not even been any indication of interest. To quote the Manager again:

"It's the power of TV. The whole world believes something if they see it running across their screens. If i was a supporter, i probably would have believed it also."

    Mowbray - dismissed the speculation.

AS a supporter, I confess I bought into the rumour, as many did – even for a split second. In a sequence of minutes, these “exclusives” spread like wildfire, without any semblance of validity. The lesson is clear; while we all wait with baited breath to hear of a player on the move, a moment’s calm and some research can save a lot of heartache.

I will never buy into Richard Nixon’s theory that “The Press is the enemy.” However, as the years progress, I am learning more and more to deal with them at arm’s length.
