I think it's fair to say very few players since year 2000, would have made it into Martin o'neill team, apart from goalkeepers being the exception.

I think only other player being VVD, and possibly victor.

But even with the players Martin had, his team never got out of the group stages of the champions league.

So if MON had either foster or Boruc, would that have been the difference to get out of the group or maybe have won the uefa cup?

We'd have had a far better chance of winning football matches with a peak Boruc or Foster over Douglas, undoubtedly.

I think his main issue was he'd spent his budgets on the spine of the side and didn't have the scope to go and buy a proven keeper. In saying that it wouldn't have been hard to get anyone better than big Rab.

Same could be said of our squad in general at the time the bench had the likes of Sylla, Smith, Fernandez, Laursen who were all far worse than their first team counterpart.

In fairness I had big hopes for magus headman when he signed. He came with a decent reputation.

And is best remembered for the song now

Yeah MON didn't always have the strongest of benches. Unless Lubo was on it :shamrock:

I want to be the first one to say Broto was the most impressive 'keeper O'Neill had, ahead of a young David Marshall, an erratic Rab Douglas and a disappointingly average Magnus Hedman.

A quality GK could have been the final piece of the jigsaw but it is all ifs buts and maybes now, I suppose.

There's a few players who could have went into that side at its peak, IMO, as well as Wanyama and VVD.

You could make some squad from players who have come and gone between 2000 and now. Loan players like Keane and Bellamy included.

We never got out, but we were cheated to *, or unlucky. Whatever you want to call it in Turin..

Far more team's have got out the group's with less point's tallies than us when we haven't as well..

Keeper was definitely his blind spot, it has to be said. Douglas wasn't just garbage, for the majority of European game's (although I can think of a couple big game's he stood up), but domestically as well..

Rab Douglas wasn't as bad as made out to be. Pulled off some cracking saves in the UEFA Cup run and the league that season

That was the time we had to choose between Lubo and Stan when Lubo was obviously getting on a bit.

    Golden era.

Looking back on it, not replacing Larsson was first sign of the downsizing. Henri camera on loan and we just lost the King of kings and we knew we had time to replace one of the best players of this generation for us.

I agree about Broto. I have memories of his great shot stopping from him. I was disappointed when he left after only getting in and impressing

He had a stormer in Vigo..

Honestly though he was a complete let down in more big moments, often than not..

I've only really two memories of Sanchez Broto, both being from the spot. Saved a Larsson penalty the season before we signed him and then saved a pen in an away game for us on his debut, I think.

Don't think he was that great tbh.

in fairness balde has to take alot of blame in 2003, getting sent off in the final and the handball against lyon,

although it was a great era those two nights were difficult to stomach, I find it difficult to call it a golden era because we were good enough and a bit unfortunate to not have achieved more

aside from europe mcliesh somehow winning 7 trophies during that time annoys the * of me:54:
