Hi guys, an English Hartlepool United fan in peace. If you are travelling to Maribor next week and have any questions about the place then maybe I can help you. I now live in Maribor so if you have any questions about how to get here what to do when you get here, where to eat and drink etc then you can email me or reply to this thread. poolie99@yahoo.com.

    Some brief info about Maribor...

Maribor is a town of around 100,000 people. It is the second city of Slovenia but is just a town really. It is home to the oldest wine tree in the world (photo opportunity!) and it is supposed to be where Hitler made (one of) his last public speach. It sits next to a small mountain called pohorje where there is skiing in the winter. For the size of the town there are quiet a few pubs and clubs and an Irish pub of course but not many Irish people in it! At this time of the year all the drinking is done outside, but at the moment it is a bit quiet as lots of people are at the seaside and the students are not in town.

I know Glasgow quite well as I lived there for a while and trained swimming at tollcross pool and actually was Scottish champion a few times. David *, City of Glasgow Swim Team, look me up!

I also own and run a small international pub in the centre of town in Maribor where you are all of course welcome! Last year when Wigan Athletic came to town they made us their home and had a fab time. You can also contact us through our fb page - thelivingroomMB

I hope you have a great time in Maribor. How many of you are coming anyway?

Probably about 150 at the moment I'd guess, plenty of us booked up and just hoping that we stay in. In addition, we have enough numbers for a day trip charter - around 120 names I think - but Celtic won't arrange this until the appeal is out of the way by which time they may not have an aircraft for use. All in no more than 300, although we will have fans from Zagreb come up - think someone said 40 odd, and other fans from Europe.

Few of us heading up from Zagreb on Tuesday if we can work out the trains ok - but fans coming in from everywhere really - Veinna, Venice, Graz, Pula, Ljubljana, Bratislava. Do you know how much a single train ticket is from Zagreb to Maribor?

We never really have great numbers for qualifiers and the timescales don't help. Also, not the chepeast place to get to at such short notice - plenty of nearby airports but flights quite expensive.

Will make a point of popping into your pub on Tuesday night.

What times will pubs shut at on Tuesday and Wednesday?

One way ticket is probably somewhere in the 15€ region with one or two changeovers along the way.

Cheers, not bad price. Think there is one direct train but it leaves around 7am! Another train around midday which has one change at Zidani Most so hopefully make that one.

I'm flying into Ljubljana on Tuesday morning with a pal, and getting the train up through to Maribor. Should be there early afternoon. Really looking forward to it! Couple of questions:

    1. Will it be shorts and t-shirt weather?
    2. Will we be alright wearing Celtic colours around the town/city?
    3. How much roughly is the price of a pint in Euro?

Looking forward to it see youse all next week!

We're having a pretty wet and not really hot summer this year, with temperatures around 25-28 degrees Celsius but I've heard it's going to be warmer next week.

A pint (well, half a liter, actually) of beer costs around 2,5 euros on average. But depending on where and what you drink it can be anywhere from 2 to 4 euros.

And I don't think you'll have any problems wearing a Celtic top around town. Admittedly, green and white are not the favourite colours in Maribor, but every set of travelling supporters I've seen in the last few years were wearing their team colours and there was never any trouble.

As Sacasmatron says its not the best summer this year but if the sun is out you will really feel it and its then defo shorts and T shirts weather. Having said that it was 18 deg and rainy today! Also agree that beer is around 2.30-2.50 and shouldnt be a problem with the shirts. There is a small "firm" here called the Viola but I am led to believe if you are not looking for trouble you wont get it!

Also most pubs have last orders at 12midnight with another HOUR of drinking up time (so put in a big order at 11.59!) but there are a few places open later because Tuesday is Student night and even though most have gone home for the summer most clubs are still open. After the game it will be busy in and around the center.

MR S please make yourself know to me and we can talk football!

Good luck for the decision tomorrow. Maribor will be a much more interesting place with Celtic fans than Warsaw fans that for sure!

    Hi everyone,

I'm the manager of a bar named Astoria and I'll be glad to answer some questions posted here.

The prediction for Wednesday the 20th of August says there will be thunderstorms during the day. I'd be cautious and check again in a few days as these long term predictions tend to be a bit off sometimes. I'd pack something warm to put on just in case.

This is entirely OK. It's also fine to sing and make some noise in support for your team. I've never seen any problems because of this. Even if some people would go out of their way to try to create them, there is usually a strong police presence nearby. No worries.

Usually 2.2 to 2.5 EUR. Could be more or less but its usually somewhere around that point.

If you guys are looking for a place to meet before the game, I'd recommend Grajski Trg (Grajski square). It's in the old city center where all supporters of teams usually meet. Why?

Because at that location are 3 different bars all in 100m range of each other. Even if you all go drink at the different bars, you can still cheer and make noise and make the whole square go alive! It's always an event. The residents love it and it usually creates a fantastic mood.

Also, the square is the home to a McDonalds and a hotel (Hotel Orel) and is 5 - 10 min walking distance from the stadium.

Here is a map of the square with the locations marked of three bars all within an ear shot.

And for a final note, at Astoria, the bar that is marked at the very top, we are offering a warm up price of beer at Monday and Tuesday at 2€ for 0,5 L.

Also, if you wish to bring a band or organize some music we'll be happy to set you up with a stage and audio equipment.

After the game, we'll happily organize a party and provide a DJ so you can finish the night with a bang!

And lastly, if you have any questions at all, regarding anything, I'll be happy to help out and answer them.

    Cheers

Some great info in here lads, thank you! Will definitely check out all 3 of these bars. A few more questions:

    1. Are there lots of kiosks/small shops around the town which sell cold drinks (beer or non-alcoholic) and cigarettes? Some cities (e.g. Hamburg) have loads of them but others (e.g. Lisbon) have hardly any in my experience!

    2. What sort of food would you recommend?

    3. Is it OK to drink in public (e.g. in the Castle Square)? The police won't have a problem with it?

Really, really looking forward to it.

There are a lot of kiosks in the city center, you should have no problem with tobacco and cold drinks there. There are fewer small shops, but still decently spaced. I recommend you buy alcohol/other drinks there, as they're cheaper. Below you'll find a map of the city center and surrounding area. Red dots are kiosks while blue dots are small convenience stores where you can buy anything you need. I've also gone ahead and marked various restaurants with orange.

So, to recap, it's best to buy booze/other drinks/food/knick knacks at the blue dots. Red is if you only need cigarettes, filters, tobacco, etc. as they usually have overpriced drinks and candy.

There is such a variety. Mediterranean food, local dishes, sea food, various pizza joints, kebab stands, chinese, local fast food (like the burek) etc. etc. Never have I had any problem with food here so you should be OK with whatever you eat. I can't recommend anything specifically as I'm not that much of a food buff, but I'll ask around and come back to you with this.

Yes, no brown bagging needed. :) Just remember to not leave a mess and nobody will mind.

I'll just add that we'll have two extra bars set up at Astoria to accommodate Celtic supporters. We'll also be wearing your colors so you'll feel more at home.

If you have any club songs that you want played, bring a CD, we'll have audio equipment ready and we can arrange it to be played. I'll provide an email address if there is interest in such an arrangement.

I sent a pm to Sarcamstron, I'm not sure if he saw it. :bbpd:

Anyway, is there any chance for me to get a ticket for this game (preferably online)? As you can see I'm from Serbia, so transport is piece of cake for me :)icon_mrgreen:), but I'm not sure if I could get a ticket.

Hey, I answered you a few days back. The tickets will go on sale tomorrow but only for season ticket holders (for everyone else from Monday on). And I don't think you can get a ticket for the away sector in Maribor, presumably all of those tickets went to Celtic and are on sale in Scotland/through Celtic. So sorry mate, cannot help you with this one.

    I didn't get your message. :97:

So I need to pray and wait until Monday? How many tickets can season ticket member purchase? Surely you don't have 12k season ticket holders.

Every season ticket holder can get 5 extra tickets and judging by the demand most season ticket holders will exercise this right in full, at least all my mates with season tickets are fully booked with request from family and friends. How much tickets will be left from Monday on, I can't say.
