Liverpool are mulling over a move for Celtic defender Emilio Izaguirre.

Kenny Dalglish monitored the left-back during his former club's 3-0 victory over Rangers this afternoon, which extended their lead at the summit of the SPL to eight points, as he provided an assist for Gary Hooper's second strike of the game.

The 24-year-old had become the subject of interest from Manchester United in recent weeks, with Sir Alex Ferguson attending the Scottish Cup draw between the Old Firm at Ibrox at the beginning of this month amidst fears of losing Patrice Evra to Real Madrid this summer.

But the Frenchman's decision to pen a new contract at Old Trafford, which is expected to be announced tomorrow, has seen Liverpool's biggest rival in the race for Izaguirre's signature ruled out despite Aston Villa and local rivals Everton both still remain in the hunt.

Neil Lennon had last month warned potential suitors that they would be unsuccessful in their pusuit of Izaguirre. who joined the Hoops last summer in a £580,000 deal from C.D. Motagua.

“I am not at all concerned other clubs may be looking at him," he said at the time.

"And I’m not surprised because he is a quality player.

“But, he is our player, and will not be going anywhere.”

Izaguirre missed his country's friendly with Ecuador 12 days ago with a hamstring strain but played the full 90 minutes of Celtic's over Dundee United last Sunday, which has drawn controversy after the Honduran FA complained to FIFA about the late withdrawal.

The left-back position remains an unresolved conundrum at Anfield, with Glen Johnson deputising in the role following Dalglish's arrival whilst young Scottish defender Danny Wilson was asked to fill the void in Thursday's Europa League last 32 draw away to Sparta Prague.

*sigh* I'd be pretty disappointed if the player or board felt they should consider a transfer. Personally, I don't care about the other clubs and their 'interest'. It's a compliment.
