Was listening to the radio this morning and they were slagging off someone for wearing underwear beneath their kilt.

I struggle to understand what the big deal is about going commando.

I spent around £500 on my kilt... you can't wash them often... so why on earth wouldn't I wear boxers underneath to protect the fabric (it's not the 17th century anymore!).

And as for hire-kilts - bleuuuurgh! We all know the states that some folk can get themselves into on kilt-wearing nights. Hire kilts only get brushed down after every use, so who knows what kind of * (litterally :smiley-laughing002:) is hiding in the fabric of that kilt you just hired!

Where do you stand on the great debate!?

Could end up on the * offenders register going commando in one.

On that subject. If a guy flashes his *, he gets charged etc.. if a woman flashes her * or that, have you ever heard of one being charged for it ?

To answer the question. Not wore one since I was about 10 & won't again unless I ever get married probably. Wore underwear then, undecided about the next time.

It is thought in some circles that the Picts wore trews, under a type of long shirt, belted at the waist (precursor to modern kilt) this was more practical for every day life, so underwear OK

It is tradition not to wear underwear with the kilt, that is why people don't and shouldn't wear anything.

love a kilt, but only wore a hire and it is actually health and safety/hygiene that you wear underwear. Simple.
Pretty sure a hire shop could refuse to accept a kilt back if been found commando * has touched it. * could have anything....*-rot, crabs, etc.

It seems a fairly modern-day tradition... I'm sure if ye-olde kilt wearers of bygone centuries had access to proper underwear, then they would have worn them! :smiley-laughing002:

Agree with the op on not using hire kilts. Only use my own. I always wear boxers under my kilt too. Too itchy without them.

Wore one on Friday and wore loose boxers. All the smart arses with their baws hanging out regretted slagging those with boxers come midnight and their genitals were red raw rubbing against the kilt.

Are you and your pals wearing sandpaper kilts or something. I've never had any issues going commando with my kilt on.

The tradition goes back at least a century and as much as three centuries ago. Hardly modern-day.

Aye I always hire kilts so I wear boxers. Plus if you're dancing about you could easily end up flashing somebody's gran or something, * that. Be safe, wear underwear haha.

I'd never hire a kilt. Don't care how many times it's been washed !

My kilt cost an absolute fortune so I wear it properly - and tradition means no underwear.

To be honest the * love it.

My understanding is that the 'true Scotsman' question was based on wartime humour, and not fact or tradition (so I'll give you the century :50:).

Interesting to note that the Scottish Tartans Authority describes the practice of not wearing underwear as childish and unhygienic

Also to the tradition crew - if you want to be traditional wrap a bit of fur around your waist don't go to a shop and buy a commercialised kilt with all the belt buckles and trimmings.
