I've heard a lot of people saying certain players only get a game for us because they're Irish, an accusations that's been on this site to basically any Irish player who ends up in a Celtic top. My question is, is this true?

If you're Irish do you automatically go up in the pecking order?

    No.

Though you can't deny that there has been some players signed for the club purely because they are Irish. The board want to keep tapping in to that PR machine, just like they tried with Japan and Asia/Oceania - Nakmura, Koki Mizuno, Ki and even Rogic. Juarez was a Mexican effort after the 'partnership' with Lagunas as well.

We will always have an Irish player or two, just hope they are always good enough - and not another Murphy.

That would be down to the manager. If any manager does this they would handicap the team, and themselves I dont think it happens at all.

If this was true then Murphy would have gotten more game time. If your not good enough your nationality is irrelevant

Usually the point I make when people say it :56:

Reckon there's been far more Irish players that have failed at us than was a success, Shay Given et al.

McGeady would have been benched more often except for the fact he is :97:Irish

Think we look at any market that's available to us, Irish market is a good one for Celtic, it should be exploited. The Santos Laguna partnership was established after we'd bombed out Juarez, think he was already away on loan. Was something to do with Marc Crosas.

    No not at all.
But Celtic is a big pull to a lot of Irish players.

There's no point setting up polls based on every daft comment you read on here

Otherwise you'd be here all day

Some Irish players players get defended or praised more than they probably should by some Irish fans (eg with Stokes and McCourt), but then the same probably happens with Scottish players

McGeady was benched in favour of Maloney & Nakamura for a long spell during Strachans first year. He came back into the side the following year and was our best player.

Conversation I've had several times on here, I was just wondering if it's a widespread belief or not.

I always had that in my mind it was the other way around with Juarez.
Either way, it's not a bad thing to exploit these markets, and sometimes we will get a good player out of it. Ireland is just another market as far as I see it. Some good players, some * ones. It keeps an added (along with the other reasons) interest in there.

No but I'd like to see more Scottish players in the line-up. 3 out of 11 just isn't good enough, man.

    Agreed with that!

Aye, Santos was the year after I'm sure. Juarez came from Pumas, then the following year it was Crosas and Santos.

Not a bad thing at all to exploit markets that we can, there's a good few players like Coleman at Everton who we must have knew about and let it go by us.

    No.

And by the same token players don't get special treatment because they're Scottish either.

I agree, simply because most of our youths are Scots and, being the biggest team in Scotland, we should have the pick of the Scottish elite. Something we have massively under-utilised.

Though saying that, when everyone is fit, Forrest, McGregor, Brown, Mulgrew and Gordon might all be in the first 11. I'd be fairly happy having 5 Scots in the team. Plus Griffiths and Henderson coming off the bench occasionally.

There are Irish and foreign players in our youth set-up as well.

I agree that we should be prioritising the youth players where they are showing promise. Unfortunately our success rate in this field isn't as good as it was.
