TERRIFIED Celtic ace Darren O'Dea had to be rescued by bouncers after a shock bust-up with a notorious gangster who threatened to SHOOT him.

The 22-year-old defender was partying in Glasgow's Karbon club when burly cocaine dealer David Hough barged over and started screaming abuse.

Revellers watched in horror as doormen stepped in to stop the fracas on Tuesday - hours after the Hoops lost 1-0 to Kilmarnock.

An insider said: "O'Dea went as white as a sheet - clearly he was terrified. Hough claimed he'd been chatting up his girlfriend and yelled, 'I'll shoot you in the head if you go near her again.' There was a scuffle and it was broken up. O'Dea stood stock still and didn't move until the bouncers had got Hough out."

Hough, 29 - an associate of jailed crimelord Robert "Birdman" O'Hara - is currently dating Charleigh Anderson, who was one half of pop band Splash.

Our insider said: "Hough is a shaven-headed thug who likes to throw his weight about. He visits O'Hara every week and looks after his family on the outside."

The witness said musclebound Hough BARGED into the club when he heard O'Dea (left) was in. He ran for the Hoops star and had to be manhandled out of the door.

As he was being bundled off, he also made vile threats against shocked bouncers.

A second witness said: "O'Dea wasn't attracting attention to himself and acting the 'big man'. He was just having a quiet night out with pals when it all kicked off.

"It was shocking. The guy looked like he was going to rip his head off. He was shouting and swearing. O'Dea looked PETRIFIED.

"Then the bouncers came flying in. If it wasn't for them, who knows what would have happened?"

Dublin-born O'Dea is currently dating Melissa Cheung, 26. The couple live together near East Kilbride, Lanarkshire. In August 2008 we told how they were introduced at Parkhead by the part-time model's uncle, former Celtic and Scotland star Murdo MacLeod.

When we called to ask O'Dea about the incident, he would only say: "Some guy just went nuts." A woman, thought to be his mum, then ushered him into his home.

Hough's lover Charleigh, 20, and pal Julie Anderson, 23, released their debut single Aloha last June.

It was a hit in Denmark, Poland, Holland and Belgium. But Splash split when Julie quit to concentrate on becoming a solicitor.

Hough was jailed for 4½ years in 2005 after being caught with £146,000 worth of cocaine. O'Hara, 31, was also caged in 2005. He got a minimum 20 years for ordering the murder of Paul McDowall, 25, because he was an associate of a rival drug dealer.

Our underworld insider said: "O'Hara and his crew ran Possilpark in Glasgow with an iron fist. They fought a pitched battle for the drugs trade, and won.

"They formed alliances with other gangs and are still a force to be reckoned with - despite the main man being behind bars.

"O'Dea has had a run-in with a very scary hardened crook. If I was Darren, I'd keep well away."

In August 2008, O'Dea was fined £40 for breach of the peace after a brawl outside Glasgow's Bamboo nightclub involving teammates Scott Brown and Aiden McGeady.

He returned to Celtic last month after an unsuccessful loan spell with Championship side Reading - and recently CAPTAINED the side.

Last night we spoke to Hough's dad, David Snr, at the family home in Milton, Glasgow. He said: "I'm told nothing really happened.

"David plans to marry this girl. He doesn't want to embarrass her.

"From the sounds of things he was just protecting his girlfriend. I'd do the same if it was my wife."

Chatting up the lad's girlfriend? Darren O'Dea is engaged to an absolute stunner who was in the year above me at school, I'm certain he wasn't chatting anyone up.

    Guy's obviously a clown.

if you feel that you need to start a fight with everybody that talks to your girlfriend then you need to take a look at yourself.sounds to me like a guy who was a bit * aff that he wasnt the centre of attention and if his burd was flirting then dump her.
