While we're all licking our wounds and debating where it all went wrong against the best footballing team in the world, I thought it might be a good time to divert some thoughts and congratulate the GB for bringing one of the best songs ever to be sung at a football ground to the fore.

I thought The fields of Athenry was the best I'd heard....I was wrong.

At one time I lived in Dublin, I used the GPO and done the tour of Kilmainham jail and I have to recommend the tour to those that have never been there.

The feelings it brings up when you walk around is completely summed up by the lyrics of 'Grace' ....which I'd never heard when I went there but knew the history of 1916 to a fair level....for someone steeped in the 'Irishness' of our club...it's a must.

Can somebody tell me when the GB started singing it at games and why they picked it from all the great songs that have been written over the years......was it the 100 year anniversary that inspired such a fantastic tribute to those who have gone before us ?.....Thank you GB....you made an old Cellic fan very happy.Hail Hail

It's absolutely fantastic. I think it may have been picked up due to it being the 100th Anniversary.

I hope they stick with it though, it's always been one of my favourites.

Was speaking to my mate pre-game on sat about songs at parkhead and we both said we would love to hear grace at the games....and then it was belted out. Amazing.

It's the most beautiful song I've heard. I love hearing us sing it.

My godfather worked in the H-Blocks (please refrain from judgement straight away) in the late 80s having been drafted in from here. He isn't a Celtic fan nor does he go out of his way to talk about his experiences.

However, he has a fond love for republican ballads and does a great rendition of Grace. Whenever there is alcohol and my guitar is available, Grace is his first request. Love this song and so glad it rings around Paradise

I love the song but I've no idea of the story behind it, what is the story? I know i could probs google it but then i'd have to sift through all the * written by * Loyalists probably.

I don't think you will catch anyone with that, you need to be more subtle :bbpd:

Grace Gifford married her husband Joseph Plunkett, one of the leaders in the Easter Rising, in the chapel of Kilmainham Jail just hours before he was executed for his involvement. She never remarried. The song is sung from the point of view of Joseph to Grace, and is of his heartbreak and love for her, for he knows he will die and cannot stay with her.

"Oh Grace, just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger,
They take me out at dawn and I will die,
With all my love, I place this wedding ring upon your finger,
We won't have time to share our love, for we must say goodbye."

    Absolutely heartbreaking

Because I didn't think KAI stood for Kill All Irish and assumed it was a name :56: I do apologise for not being well versed on the troubles as well.
