He is one of my favorite sportsman. I always wondered if he had been Irish or British. I read that his dad had been a Cliftonville fan and I also read his son Calum was a Celtic fan and that is a reason I believe he was Irish, but his surname doesn't sound Irish to me.
Anyway, some hypocritical journalists call him "Irish drunker, but British footballer". Can someone tell me if he was Irish or British? I heard that he declared himself as Irish, but I couldn't find anything about it.

I don't know a lot about him to be honest.

I think you told me that he wanted a United Ireland football team?

If he was born in Ireland then I'd presume he's Irish.

I would see him as Irish but a lot of the North would see him as British. I would say George Best thought of himself as British. He would have been raised as British by his family who I think were staunchly Unionist. I think it was Best who said that if he hadnt been a pro footballer, he would have been at home stoning and rioting against the fenians

I'm reading his book at the minute and he refers himself as irish and from Ireland. And he admits that the orange order is sectarian and the twelth is basically a day for prods to rub it up Catholics. He was a great guy.

The same as i am Scottish and someone born in Wales is Welsh people born in Northern Ireland or Ireland are Irish.

P.S Northern Ireland is not part of Great Britain (GB is Scotland, Wales, and England), it's part of the United Kingdom so he cannot be British :50:

    I read that too.
I think it is the same article that says his dad was a Cville fan. Contradictory.

    :50: I always loved him.

Hes an Irish protestant doesnt make him any different than me as a catholic. He himself claimed to be Irish and hated the violance going on in Ireland at the time. Best isnt a stand out Irish as a name but seems to be Irish as I know of a few Irish best's.

Does it matter? One of the finest footballers to ever grace the earth, English Irish Scottish Welsh or British.

He wasn't bigoted with his views or behavior was he? - No.

You've got it the wrong way round. Northern Ireland isn't part of the United Kingdom - hence why it says 'United Kingdom & Northern Ireland' on your passport, but it is a part of Britain.
