Former Hartlepool United midfielder and current Celtic first team coach becomes the odds-on favourite to take over at the Suit Direct Stadium

After former Middlesbrough manager Jonathan Woodgate moved to the front of the odds last week ahead of speculation surrounding the 41-year-old making an appearance at Vale Park on Saturday, the bookmakers have now instilled a new leading candidate for the Hartlepool United vacancy.

And it is a candidate who Pools fans will be familiar with.

Gavin Strachan made just under 100 appearances for Hartlepool during a three-and-a-half year spell at the Suit Direct Stadium from 2003-2007.

The 42-year-old arrived from Southend United and scored eight times in total during his spell in the North East.

Strachan, son of former Coventry City, Celtic and Middlesbrough manager Gordon, went on to feature for Stockport County, Peterborough United and Notts County before winding his playing career down in the non-league scene.

Strachan has only had one spell in management after taking over at Northern Premier League side Ilkeston in 2015 after four years spent as youth coach at Peterborough.

But the Scot was only in charge for six months before leaving to team up with Darren Ferguson at Doncaster Rovers in an assistant role.

Strachan followed Ferguson once more back to Peterborough in 2018 where he spent two years before moving to Scottish giants Celtic as first team coach in the summer of 2020.

Strachan remained in his role with the Glasgow club following the dismissal of Neil Lennon after the Hoops failed to secure the Scottish Premiership title last season.

But now the former Pools midfielder has become the odds-on favourite to take over from Dave Challinor who left for Stockport four weeks ago.

Both parties were interested in doing a deal but Hartlepool couldn't afford the compensation for the laptop and Strachan wasn't willing to leave without it

    Hartlepool is a * shitehole.

Some * would probably swipe his laptop off him in the middle of a game.

According to a couple of youth players, he’s actually extremely knowledgeable and gets his point across really well when it comes to tactics and positioning. Also apparently very data driven, which may explain why he’s never seen without his laptop.

I think it would be a good idea for Celtic TV to do some sort of feature on the coaching staff, just to give the fans some insight. From the outside looking in, it can be so easy to make assumptions and revert to disliking guys when we don’t really know what they contribute.

I'm starting to think he's had a bit of a unjustified time during the Lennon era. If you give a tradesman tools which he doesn't know how to use he's going to do a * job using them. Ange looks like he knows exactly how to get the best our of him which currently looks like it's benefiting our squad right now.

I know 'laptop' has become a bit of a running joke now, but the few people that were genuinely raging at the sight of him/it last season were hilarious, everyone wants us to modernise as a club, a big part of that is tracking and analysing player data, not sure how you do that without a computer. Under a manager like Lennon that doesn't really believe in trivial things like fitness, tactics or reviewing footage of games, sure that laptop might as well have been a block of wood, but I think Ange will be putting all the data to good use, making sure everyone is hitting targets both in games and training.
