Prospect of playing Celtic at Parkhead no longer scares European teams, says ex-England manager Fabio Capello

FORMER England boss Fabio Capello last night launched an attack on “long-ball” Celtic and insisted they have lost their Parkhead fear factor.

The Hoops have stuttered recently in the league and could even lose top spot for a few hours later today. But they have a glamour tie against Inter Milan in the Europa League next month to savour.

However, the 68-year-old Italian, who is manager of Russia, has been left stunned by the decline of the Hoops in European competition recently.

And he reckons Inter or any other European clubs aren’t quaking in their boots anymore about the prospect of playing at a packed-out Parkhead.

And Capello gave a damning indictment of the football Celtic play under Ronny Deila.

The former AC Milan, Real Madrid and Juventus boss said: “I saw some games that Celtic played at home in Europe recently – and they are not the same team I remember.

“Before being drawn to play at Celtic was a terrible game to play because of the atmosphere and the way they performed.

“Now I think they are not so strong at home – in fact they seem to be finding it difficult to play at their own stadium.

“They are not the same at home as before and it’s not so hard a game now. I watched them in their last home game in Europe, against Salzburg, and it was just not the Celtic of old.

“They had lost the things that used to make them a great team.

“They used to be fast, strong and dangerous – but in the games I saw them there was none of that.

“They were hitting long balls all the time and it was very confusing to watch. There seemed to be a lack of confidence.”

However, Capello – speaking after the Dubai International Sports Conference – has at least offered Celtic some glimmer of hope for the Inter tie.

He said: “You never know what can happen during a cup game in Europe.

“Celtic could raise their game against Inter Milan and play better, like they used to.

Based on last year's performances in Europe, he is spot on. All we done was launch long balls up to Samaras. It was one of the reasons I was happy to see him leave, because it was absolutely torture to watch.

    Long balls?
Obviously hasn't watched our games then.

Though obviously the sweeping statement of us not being as good as we were is true. But we know that.

He mentions this season games, we don't have Sammy, and we seldom use long balls.

We have declined, it is a problem, but we need to accept it, which we are. Capello telling us this is nothing new to us.

Salzberg outplayed us, but they also scored 9 goals against the Croatian Champions including a 5-1 humiliation at their own gaff.

They are really in form and I wouldn't expect anyone to watch that game and come away with a positive statement about us tbh. He's right though, to see us dismantled at home by the likes of Legia, Maribor and Salzberg isn't great to watch.

On the flip side, he would never have had a chance to comment on Lennon's team's first shot at Europe as we never qualified after getting * off the mighty Utretcht.

And I've never thought we've a long ball team - ever.

    Swings and roundabouts.

How far do we have to go back to see a successful Fabio Capello? 2007?

    *.

Never liked him. But he's right in saying we aren't what we used to be at home.

Not sure about long balls but can't argue with the other stuff he's saying.

He's right in the fact that the fear of paradise isn't what it used to be by a long way. He's talking nonsense about the long ball though..
